Moms who pump - Why am I getting milk in the tubes?
OK, so I'm using a Medela PIS and I'm at my wit's end with it.
I've had trouble with little/no suction on one side but I fixed that by taking the pump apart and cleaning it with alcohol swabs.
Then I thought my shields were too small because I had a lot of tenderness in my breasts so I changed out all my shields for a larger size. I've even replaced the adapters and the membranes.
Now I keep getting milk in the tubes -- WTH? The white part of the membranes are facing my breasts (like the Medela website recommends) and I'm making sure they're dry and not 'sticky' at all because I've also read that can cause them to not open/close appropriately.
With a 2 yo and a 4-mo old at home, I'm having trouble figuring this out -- just not enough time to try to troubleshoot it...I'll call Medela tomorrow but I REALLY don't want to buy a new pump. Can anybody help??

Is it milk or condensation? Either way...try running the pump with the tubes only (no attachments) to dry it out. Make sure everything is attached tightly and when you do pump...run the tubes on the machine alone for a while after to dry them out. Remove them each time and hang them on a knob (I use the kitchen cabinet) to continue to dry out.
Not sure if it will help but wanted to throw that out there.

this happened to me once too... I think it had to do with those white tab things. I let the pump run to dry the tubes out and put new white tab things in.. it seemed to help.

This might be a dumb ques but are you filling the bottles each time? My friend had a major oversupply and would get milk in the tubes every time. She finally switched to the bigger size Medela bottles (they are like 8 or 10 oz i think?) and the milk did not go up as far so it didn't overflow.

No, that's not a dumb question I'm using an 8-oz bottle on one side and a Playtex Dropins 'Pump and store' system on the other side. I get milk in both sides sometimes, while it's only on one side or another at other times.
And it's definitely milk, not condensation.
I've changed the membranes, changed the tubing, changed the personal adapter things, and the shields. I really think it's the pump at this point.
