Moms whose DC has reflux - did anyone find formula worked better for DC than BM?

I am currently EBF but with this reflux it is hard not to wonder if there is something in my milk that is upsetting my little man. Did anyone find switching to formula helped? TIA Chat Icon

Both my DD's have/had reflux. My 1st I EBF for 4 months then she got 100% formula. There wasn't any change in her reflux. we couldn't get her off meds fully until she was over 1 years old.

My 2nd was formula fed from the getgo and has reflux and is also on meds. :(

Thank you for the quick response. I'm so sorry for you...because I totally HATE this! So far we have tried zantac and it actually made him worse. Now we are giving him a break and then probably switching to Axid...but, I hate seeing him so uncomfortable especially now that it is during feedings :( :(

aww it's awful to see them in pain and suffering when all they want to do is eat in peace and not hurt when it comes back upChat Icon

My DD's started on Pepcid, and that didn't work, then went on to Prevacid. Prevacid made a world of difference!

It took prob a good week for the meds to def work consistently, but with the prevacid we saw improvement in 3 days.

I am sooo not a meds person either.

My 2nd is a spitter, and at least when the river came up, it didn't hurt her. My 1st was a silent reflux baby, she'd scream for hours for no apparent reason before the meds.

Oh i hope your little one feels better soonChat Icon

We had success with the Enfamil AR formula....but if you still want to give BM, maybe ask the Dr about adding a small amount of rice cereal to expressed milk...this worked for someone I knew...you would have to pump for all feedings though....

Reflux is tough....the meds (Zantac, Axid, etc) only serve to reduce the acid, they don't reduce the actual reflux action, they just cut down on the burning and with young infants that are growing quickly, it can be hard to keep up with the dosage. For us, the meds helped but they didn't really solve the problem, the AR formula really helped DD, but that's not to say there aren't other solutions.

Good luck!

ETA - I don't think its anything in your milk causing the reflux....reflux is very common in babies since the epiglottis is still developing.

I was BFing and also tried 4 different formulas and nothing helped. DS is now on Axid and Metoclopram and is doing much better.
