the only reason i would do it is to get ME in the photo, since i'm the family photographer i am never in any of the pictures...

yes 
i'm just not that good with my SLR, yes the colors are beautiful but actually setting up a good shot is not something that I have a handle on!

Not a studio like as in Kiddie Kandids or Sears.
I would hire a professional photographer though. I can get decent shots of my kids but I'd love great family shots.

Ive never been a big PORTRAIT Studio person to begin with. I cant remember the last time I took the kids....
I had Lorimarie take Caden's first birthday shots...those were the first professional pics I had taken of him.
I'll probably be hitting her up again to get a nice family shot of us...It would be nice for me to actually be in a pic..
Also, Ive found that it's nice to have someone elses perspective in photographs....we all have different styles etc.

I love my SLR and I do get great pictures. But I don't get the pics that a professional would get - KWIM.

We already have. There are some props that you get at the portrait studio that are important to me (like the big numbers for each b-day).

just got back today and posted my sears pics (which i'm happy with).  i like having a solid color backdrop and i also need it for family pics b/c i'm always the photographer.

I think ( and I dont have an SLR but am opinionating anyway ) it depends on how well you take pics and also if you can use photoshop etc. I would never be able to take pictures as well as say Barb, Summer etc off hand, it would take a while.
I know people who have great SLR's but their pictures aren't really that good.

I don't think I will ever go to a studio like Sears but I will go to a pro photographer like one of the vendors on here.
I did Sears for Jared's 1st birthday photos and I will do Nikolas' pics when he's one too. I will not be doing Sears though.

Ouch. That's not very nice. Especially for someone who has made such a point of trying to keep the peace on the boards lately.
There are a lot of posters on this board who have SLRs who post their own pictures all the time (me being one of them), I wonder how many people think you're targeting them with that statement....
I'm just saying......
To answer the original question though, I never got professional pictures done before or after I got my SLR. I love my camera, and I love to take pictures with it. And I'm too cheap to pay anyone else to take pictures when I spent as much money as I did on the camera!
If someone was willing to take Lily's picture for free, I'd love to have professional pictures of her....but I can't rationalize paying for the camera, and then paying someone else to take her picture, does that make sense?

I don't think she meant it to attack anyone.  Just because you have a fancy SLR doesn't mean you will get great pictures. The photographer makes the pictures not the camera. A professional grade camera isn't going to make professional looking pictures with out some talent and likewise a talented photographer can take professional looking pictures with an entry level camera.

Well, considering the first thing she dm24angel was that she didn't own an SLR but would offer an opinion anyway, and then made the comment about some SLR owners not taking good pictures, I think it was fair for Palebride to remark that her comment wasn't very nice.

Absolutely I will. I'm definitely not a photographer and I don't have the time or patience to work my pictures in Photoshop. I probably won't use places like Sears or JCPenny's, but I do have a professional photographer friend with her own studio that will do our family shots. Plus, some of the ladies on here capture great shots during playdates!

Well, not to brag, but I am by no means a professional photographer, nor would I pretend to be....but I've gotten some great pictures with my camera, without really trying. I think the camera does make a big difference. I've had people see my pictures and ask if it was done professionally....which makes me laugh, but still!
