I know people who have great SLR's but their pictures aren't really that good.

Ouch. That's not very nice. Especially for someone who has made such a point of trying to keep the peace on the boards lately.
There are a lot of posters on this board who have SLRs who post their own pictures all the time (me being one of them), I wonder how many people think you're targeting them with that statement....
I'm just saying......

Passive agressive targeting in a post about cameras is not my style Chat Icon

I was actually thinking of my sister in law , who has a top of the line Nikon D90 and yet has no clue how to use it and all her pictures have red eyes , are blurry, out of focus etc...didnt think I needed to clarify that though. I think maybe too much drama lately has people jumping the gun to point fingers a bit here??

To answer the original question though, I never got professional pictures done before or after I got my SLR. I love my camera, and I love to take pictures with it. And I'm too cheap to pay anyone else to take pictures when I spent as much money as I did on the camera!

If someone was willing to take Lily's picture for free, I'd love to have professional pictures of her....but I can't rationalize paying for the camera, and then paying someone else to take her picture, does that make sense?

I don't think she meant it to attack anyone. Chat Icon Just because you have a fancy SLR doesn't mean you will get great pictures. The photographer makes the pictures not the camera. A professional grade camera isn't going to make professional looking pictures with out some talent and likewise a talented photographer can take professional looking pictures with an entry level camera.

Well, considering the first thing she dm24angel was that she didn't own an SLR but would offer an opinion anyway, and then made the comment about some SLR owners not taking good pictures, I think it was fair for Palebride to remark that her comment wasn't very nice.

Not that I should need to further explain myself but why not.....I was actually thinking of this b/c I have always wanted an SLR, and have a very good, semi expensive, digital , high zoom, if not SLR camera myself, yet just took my son to Target to get his photo's for his 2nd Birthday and thought why didnt I do them myself and then realized I know nothing about lightening, zoom, exposure etc ....

Hope that clarifys my response for you all Chat Icon

Now that I've learned a little bit more about photography, I realize how very little I do know.

Donna/dm24angel is right. While an SLR will help you capture a shot quicker & the image quality will be better, if you don't know how to compose a shot or ever get off the Auto Button (something I'm only beginning to learn after having a DSLR for 5 years), it will not be professional grade.

There is a significant difference in my photos versus a professionals. We can all take a decent candid on occasion but it's knowing the lighting, the f-stop, the ISO, etc that will produce photos like some of the professional photographers on here.

The next time you have an amazing meal, do you tell the cook they must have an amazing set of pots? It's not about the camera. It's about knowing what to do with it.

Re: Moms with SLR's will you ever go to a portrait studio again?

Both Donna and Barb are right. I have an SLR and I have still learning. I am not even close to some ladies here who have now became vendors. They have talent, the eye for the shot.

I may get some decent shots and I am proud of some "lucky" shot but man, it takes a lot of pics to find a few good ones.

Yet, my SLR is MUCH better than my regular old camera. That still does not make me a prof. photographer. There is a reason this is not my job.

I will not be using protrait studios like Sears or JC Penney or at TRU but I will hire one of our talented vendors for "special" shots.

It took some convincing DH that I wanted to do a photoshoot with someone else since I have an SLR but I "sold it" as "we" would be in the pics too.Chat Icon Chat Icon

OMG LOL - are we married to the same man Chat Icon He always wants to know why *I* can't do it....wants me to "set the timer" Chat Icon Ummm, 2 toddlers, not gonna happen Chat Icon

I used to go to portrait studios and had a few good experiences with Kiddie Kandids. For me, it was easier not to have to deal with getting upset or aggravated that I couldn't get the shot. I was never a fan of the studio stuff but with 2 kids 12 months apart it was the lesser of 2 evils and made the grandparents happy.

Now, as my skills progress and my kids get older, every now and again I take them out and sort of enjoy it (its harder with your own kids).

I just didn't see how that comment fit into the thread, so I figured I'd point out that it might seem to be a dig at someone on here. If that's not how you meant it, great!

You are SOOOOO right!
When maris first took Gillys pics they were Awesome! She told me that the Nikon was so easy to use and to get one. She definitely underestimated her talent on that one bc YES its easy for her bc she has talent...I suck at it...LOL
Well I guess it makes me suck less then I would with a regular camera. So in the end...she will be taking new pics of gilly once Brayden is here so I dont produce anymore "sucky" pics with my SLR....Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

OR.......if that's not how you meant it, sorry for jumping down your throat about it.

I can look through several threads in the past week where passive aggressive bull$**** was posted and no one batted an eye. But the minute there is an opportunity..POUNCE.

Are you serious with that? Where did I jump down anyone's throat? I see nothing wrong with what I wrote. I was not rude. I was not nasty. I was stating my opinion.

And I certainly don't need you or anyone else helping me to draft my responses. Thanks though!

Re: Moms with SLR's will you ever go to a portrait studio again?

We had one studio photo shoot, and I won't be going back to a studio.... My photos come out much better than the "pros", at least in that instance. I would rather have photos with something meaningful as the backdrop, not "backdrop #6". Years from now, when I look back, we can say "That was the room that Daddy painted", "That was what the front yard looked like". "That was Daddy's truck when you were little", etc, etc.

We still get the school photos and sports photos, so those are professional, but I still like mine better than any of those we've gotten.
