More kitchen opinions needed!

I get my best advice and suggestions here, so I'm bringing my next decorating issue to you lovely girls and guysChat Icon

But before I get into it, I just want to say that the guys are here sanding and doing their thing to the kitchen floor, and holy moly, I can't even believe what it looks like!Chat Icon Chat Icon I can't believe we were steps away from tiling over it!

Ok, anyway, onto my decorating issue. Ok, so in my kitchen we have paneling on the bottom half of the wall and wallpaper on the top half of the wall. It's ugly. I painted the paneling white to just kind of spruce it up a bit, but now we're going to replace it with beadboard. The top half of the walls are not in great shape, so I bought a paintable wallpaper in a pressed tin pattern that I'm going to paint a very faint celery green color. My dad and my husband are horrified by this, they think we should do beadboard all the way up to the ceiling, then put a chair rail and paint the top the green color and leave the bottom white. I think that'll look bad, but possibly because I can't picture it.
So, any opinions? Thoughts? Ideas? Does anyone have pictures of beadboard on half the wall, and beadboard on the entire wall? I'm feeling overwhelmed by the choice. Oh, and here's what we have now, along with a small section of the paintable wallpaper I bought.

No... I like your idea WAY better. I like the texture that that paintable wallpaper will bring into the room.

I can't picture beadboard up to the top either.

I would wallpaper the top half, but I am not sure about the paintable wallpaper--I have never seen it in action.

Alternatively, you could fix the walls & paint, but I don't know how bad iti s or what kind of material it is.

Re: More kitchen opinions needed!

The walls are plaster and I honestly dont' feel like going through what I went through in the rest of the house in order to get them in pristine painting condition. I love the look of the textured wall paper, actually, it looks really cool. I put up most of it last night and painted a small section, and I really like it, but my hubby and dad have me thinking now. ugg. decisions, decisions!

i think floor to ceiling bead board with a chair rail would look odd.

i would leave the bottom beadboard, add a chair rail, paint the top, and add crown molding. i really like the paintable pressed tin wallpaper but think it would be too busy with the beadbaord.

I think your idea sounds good, although I have never seen that paintable wallpaper so I don't know how it looks done. I think the beadboard looks best halfway up, and the light green should look great with the cabinets. Good luck!

I like the way you want to do it. Sounds very nice.

When I think of beadboard to the ceiling, I'm thinking very beachy or cottage feel. If that is what you are going for then great, but if not, I would stick with the half wall of beadboard.

I think painting the wallpaper would be great. Texture and a hint of color. Much better then plain old white. JMO

Rachel, I think your idea will look awesome! It will be so bright. Another idea is to take down the wallpaper and use the tin wall paper on the ceiling. You can still paint it any color, like white or silver. Just a thought. But the paneling/beadboard all the way up is a bit far fetched for me.

this looks great.

but I think it's because the walls are clean (re bare) otherwise.

do you have an eat in kitchen/diniing area Rach?

if you did, I would consider doing the floor to ceiling beadboard ala super cool photo that Jen found above, and continuing YOUR idea for the kitchen.

I think with the cabinets etc, full wood would look to "heavy" if that is the proper word.

I also think having the a difference in the color/texture of the walls would separate be a nice delination of the "separate" uses of the two spaces (if in fact, you HAVE to spaces)

if not, if it's just a kitchen area, have it your way...again b/c of the "heaviness" factor of the wood on wood all the way up the walls.

Re: More kitchen opinions needed!

Jess, I agree about the heaviness of floor to ceiling beadboard. So I think I'm going to stick with my original idea of beadboard on bottom, faux tin on top. My plan is that I'm going to prep the walls good enough that if I don't like the wallpapered look, I can just paint the walls, but in such a small, white space, I thought the texture of the tin pattern would be interesting. Also, I wanted to update with a picture of the floors after their first coat of poly. I love that the look of old wood. There was only one spot with a bit of staining and it'll end up being under the fridge, so it's not a big deal. They'll be back tomorrow for the next coat of poly, then we're done and ready to move on!

Chat Icon the floors look FABULOUS!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

and I really like your tin wallpaper idea, especially since you have an older home.

between that, the floors, and the beadboard...I think you'll really be giving a nice feel to the age of the house but using the light colors will keep it light and "modern"...I can't wait to see how it looks with everything else.Chat Icon

Re: More kitchen opinions needed!

I must sound like the biggest dork ever, but I really am just so excited to see my kitchen coming to life. It's something that I thought we wouldn't be able to do for a long time, but now that I have the confidence to do a lot of the work myself, it's amazing to see it happening. I have so much love for this house that it's unreal, so it makes me feel so good to take care of it. I know, I'm a dork. And it's hard to believe that this is what we started with!

Re: More kitchen opinions needed!

The kitchen is coming out great and love your new found hardwood floors. They came out great. I really think that sticking with the half beadboard and half painted wallpaper will look amazing. I really can't wait to see it finished. And you should be very proud of yourself. Your not a dork by any means. Now take a bow for all the hard work you have done already. Looks great!! I really like your idea and I think it will look really cool. I have beadboard with a green on top in my mud room. If I get a chance I'll take a pic so you can get an idea of the colors (even though it's not textured).

Re: More kitchen opinions needed!

The floors look awesome!

I'm not sure how tall your ceilings are, but maybe to compromise get the 8' beadboard so it's pretty high up the wall, then there is only a few feet of paintable wallpaper. Or cut the 8' beadboard slabs to 5 or 6' so it comes up a bit higher than the paneling you have there now. Either way, I wouldn't do beadboard all the way to the ceiling.

I have to agree. What about a paintable wallpaper that doesn't have a texture like that?
I feel like the beadboard and the pressed tin wallpaper are going to compete with each other.

Re: More kitchen opinions needed!

I like the wallpaper you posted, and I like the idea of beadboard halfway up. I just don't think they will look good together. I think it will be too much --- like wearing stripes with a print. I don't like the idea of beadboard all the way up with a chair rail in the middle. Maybe you can find a paintable wallpaper that is less ornate?

Re: More kitchen opinions needed!

So I just wanted to update that I tried to install the wallpaper that I posted, and my walls basically rejected it. I just could not get it to look halfway decent, so I scratched the idea altogether and have been fixing up the walls and prepping them for painting. So as it stands, we'll have beadboard halfway up the wall, then just painted walls. Ultimately, I'm happy because I wasn't entirely excited about the wallpaper.

I agree. OR you could do venetian plaster on top. You can make it as simple or fancy as you want by how flat you make it and if you burnish it. I will give you instructions if you like but let me know if you're interested cause it will be long!
