I'm not sure how tall your ceilings are, but maybe to compromise get the 8' beadboard so it's pretty high up the wall, then there is only a few feet of paintable wallpaper.
i love this idea.. your floors are beautiful!

i would leave the bottom beadboard, add a chair rail, paint the top, and add crown molding. i really like the paintable pressed tin wallpaper but think it would be too busy with the beadbaord.
I agree. OR you could do venetian plaster on top. You can make it as simple or fancy as you want by how flat you make it and if you burnish it. I will give you instructions if you like but let me know if you're interested cause it will be long!
