Re: Morgan Freeman calls Black History Month "Rediculous"
Posted by dpli I don't necessarily disagree, but how do you feel about things like the St. Patrick's day parade, Columbus Day parade, etc?
I do think people should be equal, but I think it is OK to be proud of your culture and celebrate it on occasion.
i definitely agree that people Should be proud of their culture and celebrate it on occasion- i dont see harm in that- we're not a homogenous society- and that's the great thing about America. BUT i do think that there can sometimes be a thin line between pride and prejudice when feelings are too strong (but thats starting to veer off topic).
As far as the Columbus day parade- i always considered that an American holiday- black, white, straight, gay, male, female, etc...- i always assumed it to celebrate the country, and Every person, from every background, that was in it (in theory, anyway- i dont think people act that passionately about it on the day though, in reality).
To be honest (and i know this will probably sounds horrible since i AM Irish)- but i dont know why we have a St. Patricks day parade. i really look at it as most people using it as an excuse to drink and party (regardless of if they are Irish or not). I really dont mean for this to sound like a double standard (which, inevitabley, i think it will though )- But i think (for example) that the basis for the St Patrick's day parade, and the Gay rights parade are completely different- in that one seems more like a celebration, while the other seems like more of an attempt to diminish Discrimination, etc- but in theory, is essentially reaffirming the differences that exist. To me, the basis for st. patricks day to Irish people is similar to what Martin Luther King day is to african americans. And, in that sense, i think those *people* and their accomplishments are rightfully celebrated.

Re: Morgan Freeman calls Black History Month "Rediculous"
I love that Morgan Freeman said this and I think it needs to come from someone like him to do anything, not just that he is Black but that he is respected.
But I dont think that you can compare his comment to Bill Cosby's. IMO Cosby's remark fueled the fires of racism and racist ideas, while Freeman is trying to eliminate them and promote more unity.
We are all different and always will be, skin color is only one measure of all the ways we are different.

Re: Morgan Freeman calls Black History Month "Rediculous"
Hmmm......I find Freeman's comments very interesting and thought provoking. While I understand his stance, I'm not sure that I necessarily agree wholeheartedly. Would a non-black be seen as racist for making these comments??? I think so. Unfortunately because of the nature of the society we live in, I think that there are often instances that are made purely black and white when that's not the case at all.
Without giving this topic so much thought (I just read it a minute ago), my immediate reaction is that I don't believe that not talking about racism (or any problem for that matter) is the way to resolve it. I think intelligent dialogue about ways to erradicate or diminish a problem is always positive and productive.
Additionally, I do agree that black history is American history but I must say that the text books that are used in the history curriculum in our schools don't necessarily substantiate that. In my estimation black history month is a time of celebration of elements of culture and contributions of black people. It would be GREAT to do away with black history month if indeed black history was synonomous with American history but I believe that we are just not there yet. As a little girl growing-up until today, I've always seen the month of February as a time when autobiographys are heavily run about prominent historical black figures that have made important contributions to society, commercials that highlight black inventors and other media raising awareness in this regard.....Not to mention the attention that the topic is given in the context of book reports, story telling and assemblies in the schools. To me, this type of education, raises a level of awareness about the positive contribution of blacks which in a sense works against racism. In fact, I believe that black history month and much of that relative to it is not only still needed but that it is good for a number of reasons.
Finally, I feel compelled to explicitly say that this is just my opinion and I respect that others may differ. :)
