Morgan Freeman Spin
So apparently he feels that there is no need to have a Black History Month...
That why would we, there is no White History Month..Indian History Month etc
Keeping with that...Do you think it is silly to have a BET channel?

I don't think there is anything wrong with a BET channel. Just like nothign wrong with a Sports Channel, woman's channel, etc... These are private channels for people's entertainment. Anyone can chose to watch or not to watch. TV, and especially cable, is designed to provide entertainment to certain markets. BET caters to a black market, Like Oxygen and Lifetime cater to a female market, and ESPN caters to sports fans market, and Comedy central caters to people who like comedy, etc...
Its different than the government declaring a "month" for black history.

I don't think its silly to have BET and other specialized channels. Their shows don't have enough viewers to get to regular channels, but are are still desired by a lot of people. Plus, they air a lot of international shows that aren't available on regular TV.

Probably. But you can argue that NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, etc... are white channels without being called that.
I think that will happen whenever you have a minority in society, espeically when the majority has a history of oppressing that minority.
ETA: I understand the principal behind "Black history month" because before the 30's when it was instilled, kids didn't really learn about Black history in schools, so to even out the playing fields, they wanted to encourage Black history education. Just like before the "BET" most channels catered to a white audience.

But can anyone really say that those networks are "white"
Wasn't the Cosby show on NBC? Same with Different World?
If those shows were to come out now....would they be only showed on BET?

IMO, no. From what I have seen on BET, they are not typical of BET's programming. And, I think Cosby was targeted towards white people too.

IMO, no. From what I have seen on BET, they are not typical of BET's programming. And, I think Cosby was targeted towards white people too.
I have a friend from Autralia who growing up would watch the Cosby show...he thought all balck people lived in brown stones.

Well, now we have the UPN, wb11 and the major, non-cable networks are more sensitive to catering to a more well rounded audience- so no- I don't think those shows would go directly to BET.
But NBC had the Cosby Show and a Different World- and there was Different Strokes- but how many other shows featured a black family. For every show that featured a black family or catered to a Black audience, there were 5 or more which featured a white family. There general audience these channels were catering to was still a white audience.

I'm also not offended by either month- but I don't think they accomplish anything. We should be aware of women's history all year round, like we should be aware of black history all year round.

I think perhaps we are moving in that direction, that things are becoming more inclusive. When these things were introduced, I think schools were teaching history that still pretty much covered dead white men and their accomplishments. Maybe as these stories are expanded to incorporate different perspectives than those that were originally given, the "special" months will become obsolete.
