While reading the Morgan Freeman threads I find it interesting that we have a Womans history month....is anyone offended by that?

We also have a Hispanic Heritage month...is this offensive to anyone?

About BET (and UPN, c'mon! Chat Icon) it's perfectly fine to target a specific demographic. The "alphabet" networks did it for years and no one said anything.

Although NBC has had sitcoms specifically for minorities (A Different World, The Cosby Show where mentioned, I'll add "Freddy" to the mix since it's new) the main complaint is that the established shows "Seinfeld, Friends, Will & Grace and others" are not integrated and show a one dimensional view of society - mainly an entirely caucasian one.

Shows like "All in the Family" where minorities where blended in regularly just do not exist today on "mainstream" TV. But then again, shows like "All in the Family" (which rocked!) just don't exist.period.

I'm also not offended by either month- but I don't think they accomplish anything. We should be aware of women's history all year round, like we should be aware of black history all year round.

I think perhaps we are moving in that direction, that things are becoming more inclusive. When these things were introduced, I think schools were teaching history that still pretty much covered dead white men and their accomplishments. Maybe as these stories are expanded to incorporate different perspectives than those that were originally given, the "special" months will become obsolete.

I totally agree- that's why I don't think they accomplish anything anymore.

This is from the original article in the original post: Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson's Negro History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Woodson said he hoped the week could one day be eliminated — when black history would become fundamental to American history.

Re: Morgan Freeman Spin

I'm not offended or proud of it. I think we need to have Woman's day every day of the year. Just like Hispanic Culture month or something. I don't even know when that is...

Does it offend you that there is no Hispanic Month?

There is one, I just don't know when it is. I think it's March. I don't know. I don't go out of my way to prove my heritage or say "I'm a Latina" and this month is Hispanic Heritage month so...keep me in mind. I don't know. I'm an American of Hispanic herritage. That's 'bout it.

And it's heavily advertised, especially on NBC. It's also part of certain schools curriculum.

I bet a lot of people don't know about it. I used to work in schools with a large hispanic population, otherwise I porbably wouldn't either Chat Icon

It's honestly based on school district. I think if a school population has black & hispanic children in ti or hasd a majority of it then it will be celebrated. I went to a school in Garden City...so therfore I'm confused! Chat Icon Chat Icon

It isn't as widely known as say "black History Month"

And for that matter...is there Asian History month, Indian History month?

you know what I realized..and I do hear the angels callingChat Icon Chat Icon that I will then have to agree w/ mrs.professor about why there should be no nativity scene, no menorah, no stars or anything like that in the schools. We're in America where diversity is everywhere. When do kwe know when to stop to celebrate each and every person's holidays...cultures...we can't pick & choose. Women...men...blacks...whites..hispanics...asians....it gets crazy!

Listen, we are diversifying. In the 80's, it was a big deal to see Blacks in movies and TV that were portrayed positivitely- but then you didn't see any hispanics and people complained about that- and now there are lot more shows/movies with hispanic characters. Then people complained about not seeing Asians and now there are more TV and movies portraying Asians... now I see a lot of Indian actors in movies... we aer definitely moving into a diverse direction...

I read recently that Japanese people were complaining that the cast for "Memoirs of a Geisha" were Chinese, not Japanese. I found this interesting, because not long ago, it would have been white actresses made up to look Japanese, instead of Asian actresses.

It's OK! Chat Icon

And no, it's not as wide known. Although Hispanics recently became the largest minority in America (larger than African Americans for the first time ever) "our" culture and heritage is not celebrated or integrated as widely. And there are certain stereotypes that will forever peg us. The thing with Hispanics is that we are too diverse, too different, come in every shape, size, color and race (the Spaniard, African, Indian, French don't look alike, do they?) to be categorized as "one thing" and thus we either get stereotyped or ignored. In my opinion, if true assimilation is to occur (which is what every immigrant parent wishes for their child) then all the "differences" need to go away. Celebrating one's heritage and culture is a wonderful thing...but since there is no "American" culture, where does it end?

I hope my rambling makes sense.

Re: Morgan Freeman Spin

all of these holidays/months are the same. just during that time frame (lets say black history month) people/school/corporate companies go above and beyond what is done in a normal day to convey these messeges.

Red...you question is not fair because take LIW for example. They have the Ebony section just for african american brides...
TV programs, websites, products are designed to target people. With black history month was targeted, we should target "white history month" and any thing else or not target anything at all. this is what morgan freeman comments are really about...

That is actually a big controversy. There is a lot of historical bad blood between China and Japan and many people have made threats against the actresses for portraying Japanese characters. During the Margret Cho tv show, people complained because Margret Cho was the only actress who was Korean, and it was about her Korean family.
