My Dilemma and question for BTDT Moms about Childbirth Class...
BBB recently changed it's furniture delivery methods and only do certain days. Between DH and my schedule's - only two dates that are coming up that work for us are Jan 9 and Jan 16 - both Saturdays. We are scheduled for a childbirth class on the 9th - it is free. I really don't want to wait until the 16th to get the furniture in as I am due the 28th and that just seems like cutting it so close. I don't plan on baby being in nursery right away anyway but I guess I was thinking in terms of organizing in dresser, etc. I'm debating canceling the class or only going to part of it in the am - can sched late afternoon delivery. How important was a childbirth class - did you do one? I honestly have felt apprehensive and haven't really wanted to do one - I guess the way I see it is whatever is going to happen is going to happen anyway, I'm not planning on doing natural childbirth so I don't need to learn Lamaze, and I'm kind of freaking out about seeing a delivery. I can definitely say that if I had to pay for a class, I wouldn't have taken it. What do you think? Should we skip the class and do delivery on the 9th? Go for part of the class? Go to class and hold out on furniture until the 16th? Any opinions would be appreciated!!!
Thanks!!

Me neither- I knew enough from looking up breathing techniques how to get through until epi time, since I knew there was no way I was making it through naturally.

I didn't take a class and I really didn't feel like I missed anything. Most of my friends who took one either only went to half or left early...it doesn't seem like it's extremely important. You can always get the Laugh & Learn about Childbirth video from Netflix or your library. That's what I did; it was pretty informative.

Thanks, ladies. I'm debating skipping class entirely or leaving early - DH seemed kind of pissy about that though - he didn't feel it was appropriate to do that

I debated going also, and didn't end up doing it in the end. I don't regret not going at all!

If you're not doing natural then I don't see the big deal in not taking a class.

Re: My Dilemma and question for BTDT Moms about Childbirth Class...
I went and in the end wound of having a c-section so all the things in class that I learned didn't have anything to do with having a crash c-section.
Go ahead and skip it. DH was more into it then me. Overall, it was nice to meet some of the nurses and get a tour. Plus, you chat with other prego girls, but isn't that what this site is all about

We already did a hospital tour - so we saw L&D rooms, nursery, heard about basic procedures and met some nurses.

My class was a complete and total waste of money. Everything they taught there, EVERYTHING, I already "learned" here, for free. I'd just skip it.

Re: My Dilemma and question for BTDT Moms about Childbirth Class...
I never went to a class and I was perfectly fine.
If you are concerned, there are a bunch of DVD's you could rent that will give you the same info!!! You could watch it while waiting for the furniture!

I did a tour, but no childbirth class, and didn't feel like I missed anything. I don't think I would have been able to remember anything through the pain honestly--I just asked for drugs as soon as they'd let me! Good luck!

Re: My Dilemma and question for BTDT Moms about Childbirth Class...
I didn't take the class.
The only time I regretted it was while taking the hospital tour- when the nurse asked if we'd all taken a class I admitted I hadn't (stupid!) and she grilled me in front of everyone about why I didn't.
We did take a newborn care class and a Safe Baby class through the Red Cross- those were definitely useful. I don't think I missed anything by not taking a childbirth class.

Re: My Dilemma and question for BTDT Moms about Childbirth Class...
I didn't take a class - I couldn't get into one because they were all full or held while I was at work. I watched a DVD - Laugh and Learn something or other.... I liked it because it gave me a clue as to what was going on and I don't feel like I missed out on going to a class at all.

Re: My Dilemma and question for BTDT Moms about Childbirth Class...
Speaking for experience, I found the class helpful & it prepared me. But I was going to give the pain-free birth thing a shot (successful 2x). If I was opting for an epi or some pain medication, I think I'd want to know more about the logistics, etc.
Also adding in that I brought a baby home 6 weeks earlier than anticipated with no furniture, no crib, no dresser & a storage bin for a changing table, it all worked out. We borrowed a bassinet & had his clothes folded underneath until 2 weeks later when the furniture came.
I'd opt for the class over furniture.

Re: My Dilemma and question for BTDT Moms about Childbirth Class...
I agree with the PP. What's your goal. DO you have a vision on how your labor will be. I would take the hospital class if you plan on coming in getting an iv then an epidural. If you plan on trying to go drug free take a private class. I took bradley classes with my dh and i don't regret a second of it. I did eventually get an epidural and after 4 hours of pushing got a c-section and i would take the classes again

Re: My Dilemma and question for BTDT Moms about Childbirth Class...
I took one and it was SUCH a waste of time....in hindsight I wouldve skipped it and just done the hospital tour. Everything they spoke about I already knew and the practice positions/breathing all went out the window when I was in labor anyway.

Didn't take one...
Actually, my L&D nurse said she preferred that I hadn't taken one because she could guide me without me having any other misconceptions....

Re: My Dilemma and question for BTDT Moms about Childbirth Class...
Never did a class and glad I didn't because I ended up with a scheduled c-section, but if you really want to do it, why don't you have someone sit at the house and wait for the delivery for you?
