my dog bit DS
I'm so upset. I know it wasn't done aggresively, and DS kind of taunted her, but I'm so sad about it. She really bit him good. Not bad enough for stitches, but a few scrapes and one gash. DS has been so upset all day and since it was swelling I took him to the Dr. He cleaned it up again and gave a perscription for antibiotics just in case there's an infection. I just feel terrible about it. DS was trying to give the dog a treat and DS tried to pull it away.

Re: my dog bit DS
Pets are tough but so are toddlers. My DD taunts the animals and luckily the dog hasn't bit her but the cat has but if you had a 2 year old chasing you with a plastic golf club you're going to fight back.
I think getting rid of the dog is extreme in this case. Maybe just don't let DS give the dog treats anymore.

Oh my dog's not going anywhere!!! Not only would it break my heart, but I truely don't think that's neccessary. Like I said, it wasn't like she attacked DS, she was trying to get the treat. I will definitely be keeping DS and my dog away from each other when it comes to food.

I would not get rid of the dog either. My dog has snapped at my son also. I just try to keep the dog away from DS as much as I can, and he is never alone with him.

Re: my dog bit DS
That is a shame.
I would def. give DS the antibiotics. DH got bit by a friend's dog and didn't treat it. He got a terrible infection.

He has to take amoxicillan twice a day for a week. And for those of you who agree that getting rid of the dog is a bit drastic, thanks! It actually didn't even cross me or DHs mind to get rid of her. It was an unfortunate accident and I know better now. I hate that DS had to be hurt in the process, but I know to be more on top of the dog in the future.

Re: my dog bit DS
Oh, I am so sorry. After a few snapping incidents, I really don't take chances and I keep DS and the dog apart a lot more than I wish I had to. I give them both quality time and I make sure that the dog is well socialized b/c he is very friendly despite the fact that he protects his space. Did your dog warn DS at all? A dog that already gives a warning will be easier to train. The way I figure, if I prevent a hazardous situation, all is well, but if the dog ever severely injures anyone, I will not have much choice. I do not want it to come to that. I love my nasty POS dog!!!!

I'm glad you didn't even think about getting rid of the dog. I wouldn't unless the dog was intentionally malicious and/or really hurt my child.

Apparently I offended people with my comment. I am sorry about that. But...
No, my ds and dd are not dogs and are not going to be treated the same as my dog.
I had to get rid of my old dog because he was possessive and would have ripped my son to shreds had he went to pick up his food dish or a scrap of food that had dropped. First I had him trained and tried everything to keep the dog but had to give him up to a family without children.
I have a new dog who I love dearly, my son and even my daughter love, but if he bit that is our new policy...no biting dogs in our house.
I did not suggest that the owner of this dog get rid of it, I just stated my sympathy with an added statement as to why I would personally be heartbroken. I even wrote at the end that I hope it works out for the best, NOT I think you should get rid of the dog. Do I really have to be that careful as to what I write?

NO NOT CAREFUL.... but that is a very insensitive comment to make. DONT OWN AN ANIMAL IF YIOU CANT CARE FOR IT 100%. an animal is an animal.. accidents will happen. they are not disposable.. as your dc and dh are not disposable. they are living breathing creatures. sames as people if provoked they will fight back.
what happend to this lil boy is sad.... but the owner realizes it was really out of aggressiveness and will continue to love there "family"

I know I will get flamed for this, but I know if my dog bit my son, maliciously, (not in the case of her trying to get a treat) I would get rid of her. DS's safety is way more important to me. I know some people will think that I am a terrible person for that, but I am just being honest. So I can understand why you would say that mimih.
nferrandi- SO glad your son is ok!

I agree with the others that said they are glad you didn't think about getting rid of your dog. I also think that is not necessary. It would completley break my heart. I don't even have a dog (we have a cat) but, I grew up with dogs all my life and they are part of the family.

I will try to be more sensitive in the future and watch how I word things. You are probably right that I should not have taken from my own experience here.
However, I do love my dog. He has chewed my couch, barked his head off at all hours of the day, peed and even pooped on my rug when he was sick and stolen dinner off the table leaving me with two hungry , crying kids. I love him, but I just feel that if my dog bites my child or any one elses he can't live in my house. Besides my own, I have lots of kids trapsying through my house and I want them to feel safe. I would not put him to death, but instead, as I did before find him a good childless home. Presently, I am not concerned about my dog cause he is too sweet. I was very careful choosing my dog to meet these needs. ( My previous dog was massive and chosen before children.)
MY entire point of my original post was to say I was sorry that the incident occured. I was not advising anyone what to do, as I am now being advised by you not to own an animal.
How about we let this go. I am not really up for a debate nor did I mean to offend anyone.
