My dog keeps throwing up
It started last week and at 1st he was throwing up bile w/ specs of mucous/blood. Once a day but after the 2nd day we took him to the vet.
They did X-rays & found nothing & his blood work came back normal- no parasites or cancer (thank God!)
I've been giving him 1/2 a pepcid everyday & some other medicine that coats his esophagus to protect from the throw up. He is still throwing up...once every other day. Now it looks like digested food w/chunks (no blood).
Spoke to vet on the phone & she said to give him boiled rice & chicken. I'll start this tomorrow but his dog food is pretty bland to begin with (Holistic Health Extension Vets Choice). Other than that she said to check in next week with an update and we made need to see an internist for a sono or scope which sounds very $$$ and we don't have a lot of extra $ lying around...
He's acting pretty normal otherwise. Just eating a little less. But I feel so bad for him bc he knows I don't like when he throws up so he keeps going to his crate to throw up in there. :(
Sorry this is so long...any advice or experience is welcome.
He's a 2 year old cockapoo.

Re: My dog keeps throwing up
I would imagine they did but was he checked for pancreatitis or swallowing an object that may be causing a blockage?

My husband brought him to the vet so I'm not sure about pancreatis, but they did do X-rays which I'm assuming we're to check for objects and blockages...
We gave him a rope toy for Christmas and I know he was eating the rope...but he's always done this and usually passes the rope right out...I did noticed strands of rope in his vomit...I mentioned it to the vet today and she said it could be that...(I took the rope away 3 days ago)...but she said it could be a number of things.
I'll ask about pancreatitis if he doesn't get better this week...but his bloodwork was normal if that affects anything...

Re: My dog keeps throwing up
It sounds like the rope to me.. Also look into empty stomach syndrome.. Lola has it.. she needs to eat 3x a day and when she doesnt she usually pukes .. She just did it yesterday ,, I gave her maalox and she ate right after.. It sucks when it happens in my bed .. I can usually just look at her and know when its going to happen..

Re: My dog keeps throwing up
did they give him any fluids? when mine was throwing up this summer, they injected him with IV fluids and very slowly he got better. he was pretty dehydrated.
also as soon as my dog shows any signs of intestinal distress, i feed him rice and boiled chicken (no seasonings).
hope he feels better soon!

I don't know. The vet said not to let him out unattended right now so we will see. So far know vomit today.

Re: My dog keeps throwing up
Does he throw up when he doesnt eat or even when he eats? Both my dogs will throw up bile if they dont eat in the am. I have to hand feed them some CHeerios or biscuits, otherwise I come home to vomit on my furniture.

Poor pup. Definitely try white rice. It helps their stomach.

White rice actually MAKES my dog vomit.
Honestly to the OP..this sounds crazy, but when my dogs vomit from not eating or upset stomach, I give them plain cheerios, to get something in them but soothe their stomach. Then they eat their dog food. Alwyas works.

Re: My dog keeps throwing up
I took away all the toys he likes to eat and have given him no treats at all...just his dog food in small amounts through out the day and so far we've had 2 days w/o vomit! I was hesitant to give the chicken and rice bc table food has always made him throw up...he's always had a sensitive tummy...but not to the point where he was throwing up daily like he was recently...this 2 day puke free is the best it's been for the last week, so im hoping he's getting better.
Thank you everyone for the advice...I will keep you posted!
And if he throws up again...I will try the chicken and rice....just to be able to tell the vet I did what she suggested.

Re: My dog keeps throwing up
Just to add - I had a similar problem with my dog. He would throw up everytime he ate. More of a regurgitation as the food was half digested. He ended up becoming allergic to chicken and chicken by product. I switched his food to a lamb/rice mixture and he never had another issue.
Just wanted you to be aware that allergies could be a cause and they do come on sudden.

Re: My dog keeps throwing up
Thank you everyone. I put him on a strict no treat, no toys that he likes to rip apart and eat diet...only gave him his food in small amounts throughout the day...and he hasn't thrown up in a week! I really think it was the rope toy that I caught him eating...it's so hard bc he eats ALL his toys...and rubber ones hes manages to break off the little pieces of rubber and swallows them...I don't know what to let this guy play with! And he's a 17 pound cockapoo...he just has a very powerful jaw.
