My HSG experience (long)!
I feel like no one ever really describes their HSG - and I know it's something that I wondered about, so I figure I will describe mine for anyone else that's wondering!
After arriving for my appointment, I was asked to fully undress and put a robe. They brought me into the radiology room and I was told to lay down on this flat bed. First, the woman helping me took an xray picture of my pelvis (robe still on) with a HUGE machine that was attached to the ceiling.
Next, the doctor came in. He showed me the screen where I would (if I wanted) be able to watch the HSG.
Like a regular gynecology exam, I scooted down to the end of the table and the doctor put in a plastic speculum. It was VERY uncomfortable and I felt a lot of pressure down there. He swabbed with an iodine solution (I think) and then inserted the catheter.
I can't tell you the exact things that went on because I was trying not to focus on that. I found this weird arrangement of spots on the lights on the ceiling and just concentrated on looking at that and taking deep relaxing breaths.
During the "procedure" as I'll call it, it was really important that I keep my legs and body relaxed. He used a syringe to insert the dye. He also mentioned something about blowing a balloon in there. He said he could see the endometrial cavity as well as the right and left fallopian tubes.
I would say the whole thing was about 15-20 minutes, from the point of insertion to removal of speculum.
I wasn't in excruciating pain - which is what I had expected. Maybe since I was expecting so much pain, the pain and discomfort that I DID feel didn't seem so bad. I felt a lot of cramping and it was very very uncomfortable. The speculum was a huge part of the discomfort and caused me to feel a LOT of pressure. The catheter insertion was not that bad, and the dye was also uncomfortable but not excruciatingly painful. The balloon part wasn't too bad either - the doctor set it up as being "probably the most painful part" so I braced myself and again focused on breathing and it really wasn't that bad overall.
During this time, xray pictures are taken. I was also asked to lean to the right, then lean to the left to allow the contrast to spill through the fallopian tubes.
After he was finished, the doctor showed me the pictures that were taken and discussed what they meant.
To summarize, EVERYTHING LOOKS GREAT!
PHEW, right?
He said the dye flowed readily through both fallopian tubes and spilled right out, which means that there are no blockages.
On my right side, the dye was flowing a little more slowly than on the left, so during the procedure he pushed more and more contrast though to help clear out any possible blockages.
He also said that this rules out hydrosalpinx, congenital or acquired uterine anomalies, polyps, fibroid tumors, or scar tissue on the uterus. It rules of defects of the fallopian tubes and any blockages, as well as pelvic scar tissue.
He said that I was one of his best patients! Probably because I didn't even make a peep during the whole procedure, I just focused on breathing and those weird spots on the ceiling
In any case, everything is good! The results and pictures will be sent to the ob/gyn I have been seeing and I guess then I will get a referral to an RE since we have pretty much ruled out everything that my doctor can rule out!
If you've gotten this far, thanks for reading and letting me share this with you!

Re: My HSG experience (long)!
i had an HSG back in June...
after many posts on here i think i was more worried about the pain- I took 2 motrin before leaving the house.
When I was done changing into the robe I was surprised the room they brought me into looked like an operating room. I thought it would have looked more like a doctors office room. ( I'll admit it freaked me out and i shut my eyes for most of the appointment after that, at the end i asked him if everything was open and clear which it was. The xray thing kind of was like flaps of padding that moved from the left to the right over you- then back again to the left. The tube insertion and all felt no worse than a pap smear(which i dont mind). I did have to go the to left and to the right also. The only thing that was iritating... they give you a pad afterwards because you dribble the colored dye. I didnt have bleeding but some girls who are more sensitive do.
