my LI marathon experience (my first marathon)
I'm so happy I did it, happy I finished, but that thing kicked my azz hard. In some ways it was so much fun & in other ways it was like pure torture! That Wantagh is the highway of hell!
The first half was totally fine & then around mile 15 I started thinking, am I crazy? By mile 18 I was feeling sore EVERYWHERE & started getting charlie horses in both legs, my feet & hips were burning, I was bleeding under my chest from the chafing of the bra strap, my face was bright red because I forgot to put on sunscreen... And I kept spilling my drink of my shirt & pants... I imagine I looked like a fine mess!!! I was so desperate for a banana & the gatorade wasn't doing the trick. I started walking a lot & it killed my time. It took me a whole hour longer to do the second half than it did to do the first half! Whoever said the second half of a marathon is like 10 times harder than the first half wasn't kidding! damn! I trained but I guess not well enough! Every mile felt like 5... It didn't help that the view on the Wantagh is just trees... no interesting scenery to distract me. Thank goodness for the few friendly strangers who chatted with me along the way. There were times I seriously thought, no way am I going to finish this thing!! I felt desperate to lie down in the grass.
But somehow, by some miracle, I managed to reach the 26.2, in 5:45 (clock time). Certainly not the time I was hoping for but I'm damn proud of it! When I crossed the finish line (it took every ounce of energy I had left to run across it), I got my goody bag, sat down in the grass because I literally couldn't stand up anymore, and cried my eyes out!! Like heaving sobs!! I don't even know why.... I guess partly it was all the pain & partly the relief of being done!!! Then when DH crossed the finish line (about 10 mins after me) I started crying again!!
So I can barely walk right now & forget climbing stairs, but what an experience!!! I'm so glad I decided to do it. After I showered I put my finishers medal on & have been wearing it around the house all afternoon... I don't want to take it off!

Re: my LI marathon experience (my first marathon)
So proud of you because I know how tough that was! I had a similar experience. I did great til mile 17 then after that every mile marker seemed like forever to come! Ugh. And it was sooo sunny out! But be proud of yourself because that was a huge accomplishment! Hope you sleep well now.

You are not alone! My first marathon, I got to mile 19 and was well in range of my B goal...I didn't make it!! LOL Our bodies can only store about 20 miles worth of glycogen, so this is the worst part for everyone! i just read that Kara Goucher wanted to drop out in the last 10K of her first marathon, but it was NYC and the crowds were so thick that she couldn't find a break! LOL
You deserve a massage!! I hope you have one scheduled!!

Re: my LI marathon experience (my first marathon)
I feel like the biggest wuss because you pretty much described my experience with the half marathon.
I did my longest runs at 8 miles when training, and when I hit mile 10 at the half, it was like I ran into a solid cement wall. I went through everything you described - I also forgot sunblock!!!
Congrats!!!
When I got to the finish line, my first thought was: "I can NOT believe people running a full half have to do this for a whole 13.1 more miles!!!!!"
