I can see where $225 went for food & beverages but I cannot imagine charging people to eat dinner at my house. If they couldn't afford to provide food then they should have gone potluck style and ask everyone to bring something or go the cake/coffee route.

I can understand your annoyance! We had an 80th b-day for my grandma and when DH and I returned from vacation (which we left for the day after the party) my uncle informed us that we owed $1500 for the party....I swear people have balls!

I never heard of anything like this. Couldn't they just ask each person coming to bring something (like a salad, dessert) if they need to watch $$$? For 9 people, this should have been doable without asking for money.
