Name change question
I never changed my name with SS because im waiting for my citizenship to be finalized. DH is now upset because i never went and changed it with the DMV either. according to him, i can change it with the DMV and all of my credit cards and just change it with SS later. is that true? or should I just wait a few more months and get everything changed all at once?
PS - ive been married for 2 years now and it upsets him that its taking this long to change over .

Re: Name change question
i changed it with everything like 8 months ago.
then, a few weeks ago, i changed it with social security.
so, yes, you can b/c i did it.
shouldn't be a problem. but i did have to file my tax return separate from DH and it caused a problem, which is why i finally went to SS to get it done, with my college student loan. they wouldn't put the paperwork through to approve it until my married name was on my SS card b/c that is who they check with to approve it. otherwise, i still wouldn't have my SS card changed - i was avoiding going like the plague.

Nope. I did the DMV before SS, so that isn't true. Actually, I did the DMV months before SS, so you could change it with the DMV.
As for CCs, those are EASY, you call and the most they want is a faxed copy of your marriage certificate!

Re: Name change question
I changed my name with DMV years ago but never changed it with social security.
I was still able to file joint returns but my maiden name went on the tax return and my paychecks are issued in my maiden name.

Re: Name change question
I am married almost 6 years and have never changed it with SS
I had no problems changing it everywhere else as I have S-L-O-W-L-Y done over this time.
All my CCs were easy and DMV was simply showing them my marriage license.

Re: Name change question
I would imagine you could change it with the DMV now since you already have a license. i don't recall if i needed my SS card when i did that.
credit cards are easy... they just took my word for it over the phone.
SS card would wait until you get your citizenship, i would think, unless you have some other sort of ID with them.
