Nanny 911-last night's episode, Myspace related

The show really made me think. In case anyone didn't see it, you have two parents who work different shifts so someone is always home with the kids. However, even with someone home with the kids, the kids are kind of a mess. What scared me the most was that the 11 and 14 year old daughters hang out on Myspace all the time (actually, I have no idea if it was actually Myspace or a similar website) and the parents have no idea how to monitor their activity because they don't know about this type of thing. The 11 year old had 17 year old "friends" on her space and she herself had listed her own age as 14.

It got me thinking, I don't really get into any of this type of stuff and i think I could find myself in the same predicament years from now with whatever the technology is then. I never saw a need to have a Myspace account, but now I think I need to open a Myspace, Facebook and anything else just to keep up as things change. We are just starting our family but if I don't keep up now, it will be really easy for my kids to pull stuff over on me.

It's a good point!

I recently saw a woman buying a Myspace for dummies book...she had two kids in tow with her (somewhere around 10-12 I think) and she was sort of hidding the book from them. I wonder if it's this same fear. Cool for her for being proactive enough to try to learn.

I'm very tech-savvy. I work with computers and software for a living, so I know that I'll be monitoring my DC when they get older, and I don't think I'll have a problem keeping up with technology. For many parents, though, this is a very serious issue, since not everyone knows a lot about computers.

I was myspace friends with my stepdaughter so I could keep tabs on her and then she deleted her account. I found her on facebook and told her I requested her so hopefully I can keep an eye on her again.

I think one of the biggest mistakes a parent can make these days is to let their DC have a computer in their room or someplace that is not a heavily used area. When the time comes, our computer will be sitting in the kitchen, and will be monitored with parent safety software where you can keep tabs on instant messages, etc. When it comes to children and their safety, especially in todays world, I see this as imperative. And if the kids know that their computer time is being monitored I hope it would help them to think twice about going someplace on the internet that they are not allowed.

I consider myself tech saavy. I have MySpace & facebook accounts - although I RARELY use them.

I did find my nephew listed himself as a 94 year old man living in Alabama.Chat Icon If you know how to search, you can find anyone. However, I plan on limiting computer time & keeping tabs on my kids - even if that means I need a monitoring program.

Having older children it is hard. First, and I may get flamed for this, but I go onto their accounts. i know their passwords (They don't know i do) I check things out all the time. Sometimes I go on their computers and check their histories or see what they are searching on google. As for keeping the computers where everyone can see them. My 2 older kids have laptops. They use them in their rooms, family rooms, etc. Even if I tried to keep them where we all are. We're not always in those rooms. So far nothing horriific.

DH is a network engineer so this is one aspect of parenting I don't worry too much about because he knows the ins and outs of the computer world.

Exactly how we plan to handle it when the time comes. Our kids will not be allowed to log on without a "communal" password. DH is ADAMANT about this stuff.

No flaming here. You are a great mom.

DS has a while before he will be using the computer and DH and I already agreed that he will be monitored and he will not have a computer in his room.
