Re: Nassau County approves police precinct plan
Thats Great.
they need to cut all those administrative positions. There is no need to have officers in most a lot of those positions at the police headquarters performing administrative tasks. pay someone 10-20 an hour to do those tasks and not officers making 6 figures.

I think the concern is that there WILL be layoffs of officers, even though they aren't saying so. Another concern is police response time will be significantly slower...

That I don't have an issue with...
Desk jobs will be reassigned to "neighborhood crime prevention". I think that's beneficial to the NC residents.
The only downside I see is the response time but if the precincts remain as community policing centers, won't cops get dispatched from there?

I think the community policing centers will have a very limited function but are supposedly going to be staffed by two uniformed police officers 24-hours a day. I honestly have no information other than what was reported in the news, at this point. Hopefully we will learn more soon. The details seem to be very sketchy as of now, I think it is still being ironed out.

Re: Nassau County approves police precinct plan
Honestly, this seems like a decent compromise to me. No cops will lose their jobs, in fact I've read they're hiring 48 additional officers for community policing positions. No administation jobs will be lost except through attrition as people leave/retire. I don't see how response times would be that noticeably affected if the same amount of cops are on the street and are available to be dispatched.
Everyone complains about how expensive it is to live in Nassau- here is one small way to save some money that in theory won't effect people negatively and may actually have a positive outcome. I know people hate change, but I feel like sometimes we have to take a hard look at the way things have "always" been set up and see if there is a better way to do it.

Re: Nassau County approves police precinct plan
I'm trying to figure out why this is a bad thing as long as it doesn't affect response times.
If they're going to shuffle around the top admin staff & create positions for them, I don't know that they'll see the money savings they've planned outside of building costs.

Re: Nassau County approves police precinct plan
According to the friends I have on FB who are NCPD response times WILL increase.
This is an excerpt from one of their status updates from yesterday:
"Let's put this in perspective for the non-police residents... Suppose I'm working in Seaford one night and it happens to be a busy night in the 1st precinct (shooting, gang fight, police chase, etc). If a domestic comes out in Uniondale and no other 1st pct car is available, guess whose going... With an ETA of about 10-15 minutes. The Leg. and the County Executive better hope to God that someone doesn't get seriously hurt or die due to this plan."

Re: Nassau County approves police precinct plan
As far as responce times - should the officers be in an specific area, not hanging out at the precinct? I'm not sure how responce times would be delayed?

Re: Nassau County approves police precinct plan
Response times will be affected because the local precinct will not process arrests anymore. When an arrest is made the police will now have to travel farther to the "new" precinct and process the arrest. Some precincts are now 10,15,20 minutes further away therefore that arresting officer has a 20 minute drive to get back to his patrol area. In very very busy areas like West Hempstead, Elmont (the busiest precinct in NC & they're "closing" it) etc. with tons of arrests everyday IMO will suffer. The places needing the most police will lose it. It will add 40 (or so) minutes to process every arrest leaving less officers in that area to respond to calls. They are really doing this to find away around the "minimum manning" clause in NC that many are against. I am not very well versed on the exact clause but it is my understanding that each precinct has a minimum amount of police officers working at all times. When someone calls out, goes sick, takes vacation etc. another officer is called in on overtime to fill the spot causing massive overtime costs. With less precincts the minimum manning will be cut.
My issue is I have yet to see where this is really saving $ and I also feels it puts police safety in jeopardy.

No offense, but of course NCPD officers are going to be against the closings. Same scenario, how does the location of the precinct change the outcome?

No offense, but of course NCPD officers are going to be against the closings. Same scenario, how does the location of the precinct change the outcome?
If the officer assigned to a post where a call comes out is many miles away at the station house (precinct), processing an arrest for example (which may be taking longer simply becuase s/he has a farther distance to travel, and because the station house is busier since it is processing more arrests, etc.), and the surrounding cars are all out on calls, and the available car to respond is at the opposite end of the newer, larger precinct, the response time is going to increase simply because the responding officer will have farther to travel -- an officer that would not have had to respond if the original precinct boundaries stayed in effect. And had the precincts not been merged, the station house would not be as busy, enabling the officer whose post it is (and other surrounding officers) to handle their calls/process their arrests more efficiently, thereby decreasing the likelihood that the officers would be unavailable in the first instance.
Before anyone attacks me for this hypothetical: While this is obviously not going to happen every single time a call comes out, or even every day, the likelihood of this happening is greatly increased by the new plan. But if that 911 call is YOUR emergency, is it worth the increased risk?
FTR these are my own personal thoughts on the matter, and in addition, I don't think any assumption that all NCPD officers are against the closings is a fair (or accurate) one.
