Re: Need Advice-DH may be on a Reality Show
I think this is a personal decision. I myself could never leave DS and DH for 2 straight months. I presented DH with this scenario w/o telling him my point of view and he said the same thing. For him, the chance to possibly win $300,000 is not worth giving up 2 months with DS (who is only 19 mos) and me.

Re: Need Advice-DH may be on a Reality Show
I wouldn't do it, but I'm a pretty private person - and I'd much rather put my energies toward MY home and MY family.
You have a 1 in 7 chance of winning $1 million. You also have a 6 in 7 chance of winning nothing and wasting a lot of time and energy.
Also, if your share is $300,000, I am assuming that means before taxes. Because winnings like this are taxed a very high rate, you're looking at $150,000. Instead of looking at this as "Is it worth the chance to win A$1 million?" look at it as "Is it worth the chance to win $150,000?" (Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Just be realistic about your expectations.)

Re: Need Advice-DH may be on a Reality Show
I would absolutely encourage him to do it 100%. A 1 in 7 chance is very good and what an exciting experience!! Two months is not that long and with all of the excitement going on, it will fly by. As long as you think you are alright with the kids without him for two months, I would think this is a great opportunity. If you guys don't do it, you'll ALWAYS wonder.

no, she was saying 300k because the 1million would be split 3 ways, 300k going to the BIL, 300k going to them and 300k in taxes

Re: Need Advice-DH may be on a Reality Show
You also need to read the fine print about these reality shows. MANY of them, like the lottery, doll out these "million dollar" prizes in small increments over a span of years. If you want the lump sum, then you take the present value, minus taxes. In that case, you would wind up with roughly half of the prize... Most of these shows don't just hand you a check for $1 million at the end.

Re: Need Advice-DH may be on a Reality Show
First of all, this is happening so quickly. I saw your update that he's going to NY today to meet with producers. HOLY CRAP. So I guess they kind of made the semi finals with this!
I know we talked about this yesterday and I was kind of on the fence, but I was talking to DH about it this morning. He seems to be all for it. Then, of course, he asked if he could apply TOO LATE, BUDDY.
I definitely think its a great opportunity and I hope he learns more about it today. I'm hoping that he can either come home on weekends or they can offer you some kind of assistance with child care if they understand his situation. Money is no object to them, so maybe it'll work out. I know it'll be tough on you, but you're right...how often are you going to have this kind of chance at money. And who knows, maybe he'll become such a popular character that they'll ask him back for everything! You know, things like Deal or No Deal and crap like that. How cool would that be?
Please keep us updated on what happens today. I'm so excited!

Thanks. 300K was after taxes. 1 mil split 2 ways with 1/3 going to taxes
