Need Advice on Switching Doctors and Timing...Kinda Long
I am getting ready to do my first medicated IUI, most likely next week. I went for a follie check today and I go back on Friday.
If it is unsuccessful, I want to change doctors (not for that reason) but not sure when to do it. Should I line up a consultation during the 2WW? Should I make a consult now, tell them I am looking for a new doctor and then tell them I will call them when AF comes? I'm not sure what do to. Any advice??
Most people rave about the doctor I am going to, but I am not feeling the love. Every time I go, I wait AT LEAST an hour. Max has been a little over 2 hours. Today I had the first appointment at 8:30 and he was running late, and didn't even get there until 9:20. He never even apologized. Just gave me some BS excuse.
I also feel that he runs through our appts so quickly and is not thorough. He never seems prepared and always runs through his notes in front of me in the exam room. And he always makes a comment about the patient he saw before me, and what a challenging case it is and that I'm an "easy" case. Really, dude? Last time I checked I wasn't pregnant yet. He just makes me feel like I am wasting his time.
If I hadn't just spent $1k on medication and started taking it, I would switch now.
Any advice on timing the switch?
Thanks!!

i am so sorry you are going through this
its entirely up to you when you want to make a consult appt.
but it might not be a bad idea to get in for a consult during the 2WW, so if this IUI doesn't work, you can go right into the next cycle and get CD3 testing.

Re: Need Advice on Switching Doctors and Timing...Kinda Long
I made an appointment and saw another doctor while still treating with my previous doctor.
I will share with you though, that your unhappiness with feeling rushed in the exam room during an IUI or IVF cycle with the doctor, there are facilities where you do not even see a doctor through the whole cycle process and the nurses monitor you. Just wanted to let you know, so if you do consult elsewhere, you may want to make sure you make an appointment with a facility where you will be monitored by a doctor.
Good luck!

Personally, I would start calling other Drs. right away, especially if you have decided that you want to switch regardless. It may take a few weeks before you can get an appointment with a different Dr.
I would never be able to work with a Dr. that kept me waiting so long, but meeting with another Dr. may also dispel your fears that your current Dr. is dismissing you as an easy case.

Call now and get on the calendar.
The worst case scenario is you cancel because you are pregnant!! Pretty cool.
I recommend Cornell. I love my doc.

I agree with what the others said. Make an appointment and go to the consult. You don't have anything to lose!
I'm sorry you weren't happy but now you know what you are looking for and hopefully the next RE will be a better match for you.

I would also call right away because it takes a few weeks to get an appointment. Honestly I think all these docs are pretty much the same. I have been dealing with infertility for 2 1/2 years and have seen 3 different offices. Cornell to me was the most efficient but they only take specific insurance and its in the city. Good luck and stay positive.

Re: Need Advice on Switching Doctors and Timing...Kinda Long
Thanks everyone - I will make an ppt with someone else.
Susan - I would love to go to Cornell, but there is no way I could go into the city esp since I don't commute anymore. It feels like a part time job right now and it's local!

Oh I know it's hard. It's hard for me and I'm here albeit on the westside.
I just think they are the best so I schlep.
Beth-Ann schleps from out east! She's my hero.
You'll find the right doc.

Cornell has an office in Garden City. You can monitor there Monday through Friday. You only go to the city for weekend monitoring and for retrieval and transfer.

Yep, I do travel to Garden City (2 hours in traffic) and to NYC (1hr 40min by bus at 5:40am..yuck). But, its only for 2wks where it is crazy and only one week where its really crazy.
But, i want to add that I switched RE's 3 times and consulted with a 4th (which is who I think you may be with now).
I think it was mentioned above, but the larger the clinic and the more RE's the less you will actually see yours (actually at Cornell, I never ever ever see mine, only for the consults, though he answers my e:mails and calls me back when I have questions and he makes all the decisions). And other clinics are not even by appointment, so you could end up waiting an hour or so on some days and less on others. Though if you don't care for your RE and don't think you are getting good treatment, then I would consult with a few RE's at other clinics for comparison. It may just remind you that you are in good hands or you may like someone else better. At Cornell they rarely will tell me anything when I go for morning monitoring, I have to really question them. Though the RE in Garden City sat with me last cycle and we looked at everything.
I would do some searches on here for everyone's past recommendations. There are a bunch of those types of threads on here.
Good luck!!!

Re: Need Advice on Switching Doctors and Timing...Kinda Long
I would go through this cycle with him and make another appointment ASAP. Sometimes there can be a wait to get into another doctor. If your IUI is succesful than you can cancel but if not you will be all set up with a new doctor. Good Luck, with all that we go through it is so important to feel comfortable and confident in your MD.

I would fine another dr. and make the appt. so you have it - they may not have one available right away anyways. You have to feel comfortable.

Re: Need Advice on Switching Doctors and Timing...Kinda Long
I laughed when I read your post because my doctor always goes through my file each time I see him. I love that about him. It makes me feel as if he triple checking everything making sure that he isn't missing a thing. I view it as thoroughness not forgetfulness. It is interesting that we interpret the same behavior differently.

diito...
I switched Dr.'s, but not when I really should've. I don't have any regrets, just happy now. I feel that the Dr. I'm currently with give so much personal attention that I'm not sure if any other Dr. would do that? Not saying they wouldn't, I just didn't have that w/ my first practice. The first one just kept saying it was my age and that was that. After 2 failed IUI's he wanted me to go straight to IVF. Well, had my "issues" not been discovered, IVF wouldn't have worked either!! So, I think it's really important for you to have faith in your Dr. and feel really comfortable. I've had to wait over an hour and it suc Ks! I even sat on the table in a waiting room for 45 minutes.. I mean really?? With the cloth on???? They didn't know? In the end, as long as I get a BFP- the wait time I'll soon forget.
I would definitely listen to your gut!

That is pretty funny. I take it as he hasn't thought of me since I walked out of the office last time, and that he's trying to decipher his notes and hopefully he won't miss anything!
