Need Birthday Snack Ideas for Preschool
DD's preschool doesn't want cakes or sugary things and no chocolate or nuts due to allergies.
Any good ideas of a festive birthday snack to bring? It doesn't have to be sugar free just not pure sugar like a frosted cupcake.
Thanks!

Re: Need Birthday Snack Ideas for Preschool
When I used to work in a preschool, we had similar rules. Most parents sent in either the munchkins from Dunkin Donuts (they are nut free and small), or fresh fruit. Believe it or not, the kids would always LOVE the fruit. The moms would buy a pre-cut tray and send it in that morning.

Can you bring in something you've baked? There are a lot of healthier cake options, like banana cake, carrot cake, honey cake, etc., especially if you bake them yourself.

Ava is Peanut/Tree Nut allergic and CANNOT eat Dunkin Donuts.
I send in hostess cupcakes, the ones with the cream in the middle.
Fruit is a good idea. Rice Crispy Treats or any other packaged snack that has an ingredients list printed on it, is fine.

Really? Did they used to be? I remember a mom of a nut allergic child bringing in munchkins. I only thought they were cause the director of the school had them on the safe list for birthday parties--Thank God that was never an issue!

I'm not sure really, I just happened to overhear a discussion about it at daycare one day.

Last year DD put up notices that they are not peanut free. I vaguely remember hearing that there's a high likelihood of peanut dust from another product.

Gotcha...this was 3 years ago so that must explain why it was on the safe list. Sorry I misinformed you!

Re: Need Birthday Snack Ideas for Preschool
DS's preschool is nut-free & they recommend munchins for bdays too. DS's bday is next month & I that is probably what I will be bringing or maybe I'll make mini cupcakes!

What if you did an edible arrangement? I've made them myself, it's really easy.

I was thinking about doing this but then I wondered if 23 kids would get annoyed fighting over one arrangement.

Re: Need Birthday Snack Ideas for Preschool
I did an edible arrangement for Robbie's Bday. It was a huge hit both times. I made sure they put enough chocolate covered strawberries for the whole class and teachers - and then lots of plain fruit.
I've also done mini bagels with different spreads - butter, cream cheese and jelly. Kids like that they can pick what they put on their own bagel.

Did you read the above? They aren't nut free so I would let your pre-school know that so an allergic child doesn't have a reaction.

Re: Need Birthday Snack Ideas for Preschool
My class always loves ice pops. Last year we had Philly Swirl Pops (in a push up tube) because they are completely peanut/tree nut and gluten free. They used to sell big boxes at Costco, not sure if they still have them.
I know other teachers have popcorn parties (although I'm always afraid of choking) The kids seem to love that.
Also, interesting about D& D. We've always been told that Munchkins are "safe" and I've had children with nut allergies bring them in.

sorry for the hijack
they arent made with nuts, but after the FDA recently heightened their guidelines about labeling (to include labeling anything made in the same building as something else with nuts), DD now says all their products "may contain nuts".
After discussing with the ped and allergist we still give DS munchkins, they both said the risk is low and if it was something he has always had without a problem (we didnt find out until he was 5) he could still have it. But I do keep an extra eye on him when he has it.
ETA: To answer the OP, what about pudding cups, or those yogurts with sprinkles?

Another suggestion was Jello Jigglers. Has anyone made these? Where can I get cute cookie cutters? Maybe Letters or something school related?

Re: Need Birthday Snack Ideas for Preschool
our center is nut free too, so we do ice pops/italian ices or ice cream sandwiches.
You can get pretty healthy with the fresh fruit pops too.

Re: Need Birthday Snack Ideas for Preschool
Dunkin donuts CAN have traces of nuts in them...Since the stores make cookies and other things with peanut butter/nuts, they cant promise that the donuts wont be mix with the same spoon/bowl. It depends on how strict your center is on being peanut free- BUT I would NEVER give these things to a child with a nut allergy unless I knew how severe their allergy was.
With that being said why dont you do a breakfast party with some eggs, bagels, and muffins??
You could do a big fruit platter with some choc dip maybe???
Im doing ice cream sundaes for Rj- nothing healthy about that

I go in at 3pm, she goes for the afternoon session. No chocolate or nuts, ack!
I think it's going to be fruit or jello jigglers.
