Need Help - Daycare Issues and Kiddie Academy
I have had an arrangement with my parents since DS was born (he is now 1 year old) that I would work part-time and they would be my "daycare providers." Originally at 8 weeks old I was working three days a week 10-3. Since June, I have been working at a new job two days a week 9-5. The past few months, my mother has been dropping hints about daycares. I have point blank asked her if she does not want to watch DS anymore. I keep getting the same response "Of course NOT...I LOVE him." She'll drop it and then bring it up again. Yesterday when dropping DS off my mother mentions to me that she met a waitress in cheesecake factory that has her child in Kiddie Academy in Setauket two days a week from 10-6 and that she only pays $35 a day....that she worked out a "deal." First, I asked AGAIN if she wanted to to start looking for alternative daycare options and Second, I said that seem way too inexpensive. She dropped it again but last night DH told me that she mentioned it to him when he picked DS up. She also mentioned it to me AGAIN this morning...that maybe they would go "check it out." I am clearly not stupid. They cant only be charging a little over $4 p/h there. I asked her if it was the price or the fact that she did not want to watch him anymore? She said she still wants to watch her grandson...that she loves spending time with him but I should keep my options open since this waitress RAVES about it and how good it would be for DS....you either want me to put him or daycare or you dont
Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone know how much Kiddle Academy really is? (you can FM if you're more comfortable). Are there other p/t daycares I should look into that are "reasonably priced" I hate using "cheap" when it comes to DS but we really cant afford daycare (which is why my mom offered in the first place) I had told my mom that I planned on putting him in p/t preschool when he turned 2 anyway.
Any comment, advice, suggestions are greatly appreciated

Re: Need Help - Daycare Issues and Kiddie Academy
$35 a day at KA??? My kids go to KA in New Jersey and it is way more than that. It depends on how old your DC is and how many days. The older and more days they attend the cheaper it is per day. My DS is 22 months and I pay $217 for 2 days. My 3.5 yo goes 5 days a week and I pay $285/wk. My 5 yo was $269/wk.

We use KA and I pay $550 a week for an infant and a toddler (FT). The only way they would get a "deal" is if the state is helping them out.
ETA - The prices will range depending upon the child's age and center - they are all franchises. Usually the prices are pretty close though.

Do you get a discount for having 2 in? At my KA if you have 2 full time they give you 10% off lower tuition. When I had all 3 in they gave me 50% of my oldest, 10% off my middle, and full price for the baby. Without I would have been paying about $800 a week.

It sounds like your mom really does not want to watch him anymore. I would start looking into daycares asap....

Re: Need Help - Daycare Issues and Kiddie Academy
very obvious your mom doesn't want to watch your DS anymore.
just to share with you every time I was alone w/ FIL he would complain about watching my DS. but when MIL and DH were around it was another story. I was for months. finallly my mom said to me, your FIL does not want to watch your child anymore, but he doesn't want MIL and DH to know bc its like he is taking money out of your pocket.
I quit my job, my MIL was so upset dizzy spells, can't sleep, all the dramatics. my FIL was happy as a clam. to this day still pizzes me off, I hate passive aggressive esp. when it comes to my child.
I'm not sure but I think daycare for PT is pricey
ETS the complaining started when DS was around 9 months old bc hew as more mobile at that point

At the very least because your mom is dropping so many hints, I would start looking into alternative options.
Sometimes these places have wait lists and you can't start sending DC right away. So you want to know how much it would cost and when your DC could start.

Re: Need Help - Daycare Issues and Kiddie Academy
I agree that you need to find another daycare option. When you ask if she wants you to put him in daycare, she responds that she loves him. She's not answering your question. You know she loves him. She can love him but not love watching him.
As for the waitress with the $35/day, while it may be the case for HER, it may not be for you. A kid in my son's class at Kiddie Academy was paying $28/day. Sounds like a great deal, but she was heavily subsidized by the state because she was a single mom with very little income & the father was nowhere to be found.
Call your local Kiddie Academy & find out. Whenever I've figured out the hourly rate when my kids were full time, it was always about $5/hour. I imagine it would be more if you need less hours. I'd also start looking at at home daycares if that's too expensive for you. Your mom is great as back-up but she can't be your primary person.

I also think you need to start looking for alternatives.
Try not to be too mad at her....it is probably a lot of work for her yet she just can't bring herself to actually say that out loud.
And I agree that $35/day at a center is probably not a deal that just anyone can get.
