Need Help with Baby Girl Name: Spelling (With Poll)
Ok, so DH and I are still undecided on whether our DD will be named Zoe, Chloe or Quinn. Zoe is DH's #1 pick. I love the name but have a reservation that I am hoping you ladies can help me with.
My first name is Gabrielle. Most people call me Gabi. My entire life, people have misspelled and mispronounced my first name AND my nick name! I was always correcting people and frankly, it was friggin annoying!! So, my question to all of you is... if we go with the name Zoe, how should we spell it?
My first pick is Zoë but what kid needs to have punctuation in their name? The next pick would be Zoe, but I fear that for her entire life people will call her 'Zoe' rhyming with 'Toe' and she'd be stuck in the same boat as I have been!! The last choice is to spell it Zoey. This one by far, is the easiest. There is no question as to how to spell and pronounce this name. BUT... I hate that it was the name of a show (Zoey 101) esp. since the lead character got knocked up at such a young age and I feel like spelling it 'Zoey' is not how it is intended. KWIM? Please share your opinions...

Re: Need Help with Baby Girl Name: Spelling
I think you're overthinking it. Trust me, people can butcher even the simplest names. My maiden name was Brady. Now you wouldn't think people could mess that up... but oh boy... they did!!!!
I personally LOVE the name Quinn, so that's my choice.
But if you go with Zoe, i'd go with Zoey.

Re: Need Help with Baby Girl Name: Spelling
OK, I read Zoe as Zoee no need for the accents on the e. I don't know how you can mispronounce Gabrielle, but hey that's me, I think it's bc Gabriella or Gabrielle has always been my first pic for a girls name for me and if I have a girl again, u better believe that will be her name.. I love Zoe and I actually get annoyed that Rachel Zoe the stylist pronounces it like "toe"

My niece's name is Zoe and I never really heard anybody pronounce it wrong. I love the name and I think people will know that's how to pronounce it. Then again there will always be some people that will pronounce it wrong no matter how you spell it!!

Re: Need Help with Baby Girl Name: Spelling
Zoe is good and simple and probably the least complicated
The punctuation on the "e" is NOT a standard in the american language. So it will be most likely wrote wrong all the time.
I think the name is more common now that you don't need a "y" to explain the pronunciation.

So is my maiden name! Really, have people never watched TV?? Can't tell you how many times they would say or write BRANDY.....
To answer the OP, I would just stick with Zoe, although I love Chloe. I have never heard anyone mispronounce it to sound like Toe. Then again, would they do the same for Cloe?

I agree!
I would never have thought to pronounce it so it rhymed with "toe". Remember there is a Zoe on Sesame Street, so I don't think people will get it wrong. BTW, I think it is a really pretty name.

Re: Need Help with Baby Girl Name: Spelling
We went through something similar when naming our son. My husband wanted to call him Deklan because he thought with the "C" that people would pronounce the name DeclON. I argued and said people know the name. Well wouldn't you know it the first Dr visit the nurse says DeclON. UGH.
Anyway-I think most people know the Zoe is pronounced Zoey. But people are morons and I am sure no matter what way you spell it they will mispronounce...so don't worry about that and use the spelling that YOU like

People used to pronounce my name "Gabriel" (and sometimes still do though my name is a lot more popular now than in the 70's) or they assume it's a typo and call me "Gabriella." It's friggin annoying!

Re: Need Help with Baby Girl Name: Spelling (With Poll)
I wouldnt worry so much about the TV association.. it will be past due before she's old enough to have an effect.
I am with you, folks are constantly misspelling my nickname. its Ronie.. one N, with an IE. I get Roni and it drives me crazy.
I have come to realization that pretty much every name can be slaughtered. Even, Ann or is it Anne or would that be Annie...
I love the name Zoe and I say go for it!

I like Zoe and *most* people I would think know the proper pronunciation of that name. It's not an uncommon name. I would avoid the punctuation. All three are cute names though so any one of them would be nice too!

I vote for Quinn - but if you DO decide to use Zoe I'd pick either spelling w/o those dots on top (I don't even know that they're called - so embarassing) ........it's going to be a PITA her whole life .......

I think I would go with the spelling Zoey.
Not that is really matters, but I love both Chloe and Quinn. They are such pretty names. One of those would be my #1 choice.

I voted for Zoe, but I also really like the names Chloe and Quinn.
I want to tell you that I don't think people will butcher the pronounciation but I guess I will just have to say that *I* will never mispronounce it.
The punctuation isn't necessary and would probably be ignored by most people anyway. I can't even figure out how to make that character on a computer.

I like all of the options except the first. I think adding the punctuation to the name will make it way more confusing.

Re: Need Help with Baby Girl Name: Spelling (With Poll)
Zoe/Zoey is one of our possible girl names too. DH likes the spelling Zoe, and I say Zoey because I think people would be less likely to screw up the pronunciation. And like the PP said, I hate that Rachel Zoe pronounces her name like Toe too

I would never think that Z-O-E would be pronounced like "toe". I automatically think it's pronounced like "zoey" and I think most people will read it the same way.
