Re: Need Help with Baby Girl Name: Spelling (With Poll)
My daughter's name is Chloe and I spell it with the umlaut (though I don't know how to do it on a keyboard.) It is a PITA to get birth announcements, invites etc. from places like snapfish etc. with the umlaut, but if you go to a printer, they shouldn't have a problem.
Personally, I love the umlaut.
My husband wants to name our next daughter Zoe.

Re: Need Help with Baby Girl Name: Spelling (With Poll)
love all the names! Since you're leaning towards "Zoe" stick with the same spelling...don't add the "y" and you're right no kid needs to bother with accents, etc. People will always forget them and after a while she'll probably drop them. I love the name Zoe...my first car I named Zoe :) I also really like Quinn though :)

I vote for Quinn - but if you DO decide to use Zoe I'd pick either spelling w/o those dots on top (I don't even know that they're called - so embarassing) ........it's going to be a PITA her whole life .......
Don't be embarrassed! Most people don't know what the 'double dots' are called. FYI- a "dieresis" is the name of the two dots over the 'e' which indicates adjacent vowels should be pronounced separately. The dieresis is of Greek origin and is the correct term used when referring to English language words that utilize this form of punctuation. Many people call the dots over the 'e' an "umlaut" which is technically incorrect. Umlauts refer to German or Germanic derivative language usage. An umlaut is only see in these letters: ä, ö, and ü. Hope that clears things up!

I had a friend growing up who spelled her name Zoë - I always thought it was very cool that she got to 'dress up' her name with the little dots

This whole thread was worth reading for this little snippet!!!
IMHO you could name this baby "ANN" or "MARY" and some knucklehead will call her annie or anna or maria. So given that, go with what you love. And that comes from <----- who gets quite a kick over some of the mail I receive addressed to "Collect" and "Cloret" and "Claudette".
I love love love Chloe. Spelled as is.
I like Zoe, but hate it spelled as "Zoey". Let's not even consider Zoei.
But if you go with "Zoe" I'm against the diereblahblah for the written form. I think it will confuse rather than illuminate the pronunciation and you'll get people saying "ZO-ayyyy" which is abut 2,343,674 times worse than "zoo-ee" or "zoe rhymes with toe" Lots of friends with names that require a fada in Irish (Siobhán, Mairéad, Róisín) have dropped the fada for that reason.
Oh and I also love Quinn (my cousin's DD is Quinn, they were one of the first people I know who used that as a girl's name, we LOVE it) BUT I don't love it with your surname, it's a little too redundant KWIM?

My niece's name is Zoe and I never really heard anybody pronounce it wrong. I love the name and I think people will know that's how to pronounce it. Then again there will always be some people that will pronounce it wrong no matter how you spell it!!
I agree. Spell her name how you want and lead by example when it comes to pronunciation.

Re: Need Help with Baby Girl Name: Spelling (With Poll)
I think they are all beautiful names. People will butcher any name but honestly Zoe I believe is popular enough now that most people will pronounce it properly without punctuation or other spellings. Best of luck!
