Need your opinion about braces and wedding. POLL
OK....so I have to get braces AGAIN. It's a long story, but it really needs to be done now because I am currently missing one of my mollars and need to get the orthodontic work done before I get the implant.
So here's my dilema. I will be in my sisters wedding in June. I know it's not about me. And it's not really a big deal, but I can't help but think about the fact that all of her pictures that have me in it, I'm going to have this stupid azz smile.
I'm self conscious about getting them in general. But it's not like I'm walking around smiling 24-7, so I am just dealing with it. But in the wedding pictures it's non-stop smiling. Obviously it is her day, but I have so many beautiful pictures of her and I from my wedding. I think I'm gonna feel like an azz looking at her pics if I have braces on.
Would you put it off and wait until after the wedding? Or would you just go thru with it?

I don't know....that's something I could ask the photographer. That's an idea. Thanks.

I guess my question is CAN you wait until after the wedding? If it was strickly cosmetic, I might say hold off but if it is something that is effecting your comfort and your well being then get it done now.

I agree. I had them removed for my sisters wedding (when I was 16) but at that point they were on three years and I needed a ton more work done still.

I could wait....it's just annoying missing a tooth. I feel a little weird with it missing, but it doesn't hurt or anything.

Maybe I can do that. Try having them removed for the wedding. I have to call them on Monday and find out what my options are. Thanks for the idea.

I would talk to my dentist & see how the delay would effect me. If it was a big deal, I'd do it. If not, I'd hold off.

Re: Need your opinion about braces and wedding. POLL
if it's not medically immediate, then wait. Braces are very painful and you won't be happy with the pics. You'll have to keep checking to make sure there's no food in your teeth.

Re: Need your opinion about braces and wedding. POLL
A friend had to get braces recently - she was 43 - really the year went so fast -I know it was a pain for her - but the side benefit was that she lost so much weight because she never wanted to eat!
Anyway - thats not what you asked - I would wait until after the wedding if you could...

When I was 12 I had braces. For my bat mitzvah the orthodontist took them off the week before my bat mitzvah and put them back on the week after. HTH

Re: Need your opinion about braces and wedding. POLL
this sounds like something that kind of needs to be done b/c of the missing molar and implant. you dont want your teeth shifting more in the next few months.
I was 22 when i decided to have braces put on..why?? b/c i got engaged the year before and always hated my teeth. they were supposed to be done shortly after my wedding in 2004. the ortho agreed to remove the top brackets before the wedding and then put them back on.
It was the best decision i ever made and the best 6K i ever spent. The week before he took the top front brackets off and gave me a retainer for the honeymoon. I went back after i came home and put them back on.
thats an option. Or you can get the ceramic brackets..i had those along the top withfull metal along the bottom (you didnt see any of the metal in my wedding pics...lol). they cost a little more but with the clear bands, you may not even notice it as much in pictures.
You can always ask the ortho to take the first few brackets off for a week and then put them back on. its a pain ...yes...but if you're that worried about it, it may be an option.
Good luck!

Re: Need your opinion about braces and wedding. POLL
Thanks ladies! I'm either going to wait the 4 months or see if it's an option to take them off for the wedding.
I appreciate the feedback. I thought I may have been over thinking this. But I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way.

Re: Need your opinion about braces and wedding. POLL
I didn't vote, but I wanted to add my opinion....
I got braces when I was 29, and had them when I was in my BF's wedding. I know they are there in all of her photos, but I don't really see the pictures. Also, I sort of feel like photos are a reflection of that point in time in your life, and that is what was going on at the time, so it didn't really bother me to have them on in the photos. The braces were a PITA in general, but not because of the wedding.
Personally, I wouldn't spend the extra money and time to have the braces removed and then reapplied. When they took off my braces, they had to really scrape my front teeth to get the adhesive off and I think it screwed up one or two of my teeth a bit. I really wouldn't have wanted to have them do it again, especially if the tooth was already weakened from the first removal. If you really don't want them on for the wedding and you can wait to have the work done, I would just wait and do it after the wedding.

My sister had braces for my wedding and it didn't bother me at all. She had clear on top and metal on the bottom.
If the wedding is not soon, I would get them now. If it is soon, maybe wait a little if it would make YOU more comfortable about it.

Re: Need your opinion about braces and wedding. POLL
I guess I'm in the minority here, but I wouldn't let the fact that I am a bridesmaid in a sibling's wedding change when I get braces. I mean, sure if we're talking a week or two, I could see waiting... but we're talking several months. I would just go ahead and get them now.
If there are particular pictures she plans to use in her album or that you want copies of, I'm sure the braces can be edited out if they bother you.
