Neighbor fence vent!!!!!
Our next door neighbors just put up a 6 foot hideous solid white PVC fence between our houses (not around their entire yard, they have lots of bushes). I am so upset, borderline livid!!!!
There used to be a 5 ft fence wooden there before that then dropped to 4 ft when it got to the point right where the houses themselves start. From there to the front there is nothing. Today I come home and see that ugly monster.
I HATE how it completely closes off that side of our yard, just boxed it in. And it's bright white! I used to be able to see the trees and just space and it made the yard feel bigger. NO ONE around here has a 6 ft fence. I can see down about 4 houses and it's great bc it feels so open yet I don't see what's going on in anyone's yard.
These neighbors are so weird. They are never outside, they have a DD around 1.5 and she is rarely ever outside. I've seen her maybe 5 times total, never more than 5 minutes (and I'm a SAHM so I'm around a lot). Her grandmother watches her in their house and once peeked out on a sunny day and told me she isn't "allowed" to take the DD out, not even the backyard
BUT, these same people invited us to both their baby shower and the DD"s 1st birthday party We went bc we wanted to be good neighbors.
And now this?!?!? Just seems so rude to me.
While I know that I probably don't have a right to be upset, and that someone on here will probably tell me as much, I could care less. While they got what they selfishly wanted I'm stuck looking at that thing. I just needed to vent.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!
Maybe you could plant some nice things or get some bushes to hide it. You might also get used to it, maybe it looks more harsh since you are not used to it being there.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!
Unfortunately it's one of those sucky things you have no control over .......can you plant some large/tall bushes or trees to try to hide it??
The neighbor behind me came over last spring and informed me he wanted to cut down my ginormous, beautiful maple tree .....it was right on the property line so literally 1/2 of the tree was in his yard - he said he was going to cut off everything on his side (which he can legally do) so I had no choice other than to let him cut it down b/c one storm and the thing would have been in my kid's bedroom window - it would have been beem copmpletely unbalanced ! - The sonofabitch left me the STUMP in MY BACKYARD b/c they told him removing it would ruin HIS fence !!!!!
I am removing that stump this summer - EFF his fence........and then I'm planting 5 more trees along my fence - line.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!
How about putting some forsythia bushes or arborvitae up along the fence.
I actually get why it is frustrating.. I mean I think those fences are incredibly ugly too.. but you already know that there is nothing you can do (except pray for a giant windstorm to blow it away!). I'd make the best of it with what you have!

Hahaha, I need a really huge windstorm.
We bought DS a swing set with an elevated clubhouse and now I wish we had put it next to their side just to irk them that DS could still look over into their property.
I'm going to look into what I can plant to hide that monstrous bright white thing. It has no design, nothing. Lacks any character. I want to plant something though that wouldn't take up too much room since we have a shed and the grill on that side.
I wish I could plant something that grows down, as in hangs. But not ivy. Maybe something with some pretty greens or maybe even flowers. Even if I have to replant every year.
But, am I "allowed" to put up planters on my side of the fence since I would probably have to drill a hole/screw into the fence to hold the planters?

I would not do that. It could void any kind of warranty he has on the fence. And could make for some bad blood. Also if it's completely on his property you can not touch it. I would just plant some arborvitaes.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!
What about putting some trellis (Sp?) on your side of it- not attached to the fence, but right into the dirt on your side and planting some roses (or something else that will climb the trellis) ?
We did that with the hideous shed in our backyard (which we can't remove since we rent from my parents and they want it there...) and it really made a big difference. within 2 years I had over 6 foot tall rose vines...
I can totally understand your frustration...I'm not a fan of those fences either.

Are white PVC fences offensive? Just a question because we're looking into getting a new fence and it seems like this is what everyone in our neighborhood has.

We are getting a white PVC fence next year, I know my neighbors are going to be livid bc we have to rip out all the trees and shrubbery.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!
not a huge fan of pvc anything. I don't find it that maintenance free and honestly wood is just softer looking when landscapes. Rather see a privacy hedge row or a nicer wood cedar fence.

While I like the look of wood better, pvc is maintenance free. We are putting in a fence soon and were told we would have to seal a wood fence YEARLY and with 500 feet of fence, that is a lot more maintenance than we want to take on. Our fence contractor will also guarantee pvc but not wood.
I like the trellis idea or what about planting some nice arborvitae in front of it?

So did we. We put ours up 3 weeks ago and absolutely love it! We spoke to all of our neighbors to let them know beforehand, though. Not like their opinion would have mattered bc it is OUR fence and OUR property, but we wanted them to be aware. Thankfully they are all thrilled bc they get some privacy too and didn't have to pay for it.
I'm sorry you don't like it, but I'm not sure that it's fair to say that they are rude bc they put up a fence. They could have mentioned it to you before doing it, but they have every right to do it without being considered selfish or rude. I like the trellis idea with some rose bushes.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!
We just bought a house. Closing is in about a month or so. Its attached from both sides and BOTH our neighbors yards are kept like SH*T. They have 3ft. high barbed wire fencing that is falling apart. It's gross.
ONCE we move in a plan on putting up a 6ft. white PVC fence. I really cant wait to get privacy, I dont want to look into their yard, and I dont want them looking into mine.
I know the look might be harsh but Im sure you can make your side look nice.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!
I WISH our neighbors would put up a PVC fence. Right now, we have 6ft wood fences all around, but after a short couple of years, they are falling apart and look terrible. I've replace some of the really bad segments with more wood, because I can't afford to put PVC around the entire yard, but if the neighbors put PVC on the long part of our property, I would put PVC on the short sections.

Re: Neighbor fence vent!!!!!
Not to sound mean, but I don't see how a neighbor trying to improve their house in their own preference is rude.
You kind of came off to me as one of those meddling nosey neighbors. Who cares if they don't take their daughter out in their yard as much as you like? What does that have to do with their fencing choice?
Maybe that's why they put up such a high fence... for privacy from their neighbors. Especially when you write that you installed an elevated clubhouse and wish you had put it on their side so your child can snoop at them. Rhat just sounds spiteful, I'm sorry.
PVC is expensive and you hate it, but you asked here if you could be able to drill holes in it for your use on your side? no. You wouldn't be allowed to do that unless you received their approval and if you did, I would put it in writing
I think it's nice they invited you to their family functions. Neighbors can be a lot worse. You could have someone next door who takes no pride in their home.
Or honestly, you could install your own fence with all the "character" you want. Maybe set up an appointment with some companies people have used here.

No they are not offensive......at least not to most people!
Look around, I would say 95% of the fences out there are PVC so clearly they can't be that offensive.

I THINK the OP's biggest issue was that the fence was not put up all around the property.. just between her house and the neighbors. She did admit that she doesn't have the 'right' to be angry since it's their property.. but she feels it ruined the look of her own property (made it feel smaller, reduced the natural landscape).
I don't think they are offensive. I don't like them - but that's TOTALLY a personal preference. I prefer natural materials - wood and stone. I don't like chain link either. I know plenty of people love PVC... power to them!

I don't see how a nice new PVC fence is offensive... our neighbore were happy we did it. Its on their property, its their fence, you can't say they are rude. You can plant stuff on your side tho. do not screw anything into it... since its not your fence you have not right to do that.

Of course the comment about the elevated clubhouse was spiteful, what else would it be? Yeah, sure, I'll have my 2 yr old up there with binoculars and a walkie talkie
You are quick to defend what you feel is a neighbor trying to improve their yard but what if, hypothetically, a neighbor of yours put up a 6 ft striped neon pink and orange fence? Would that not bother you???
I have every right to not like their choice and to complain about it on here. As I said in my OP, I was sure that I would get comments like yours, but again, I could care less. I was venting and did exactly that.
