What do you make of this?

Basically, a few celebs have gone on a "Tweet Strike" until a million dollars is donated to stop AIDS.

Read below pic of Kim Kardashian in a coffin for more info.

I'm all for a cause, but really? Can't these celebs band together and donate the million themselves?

I see Kim K (here is Kim K's official tweet page, proclaiming she is "dead" ) with shopping bags all the time of luxury designers... can't it come out of her designer handbag instead of my Target bag on clearance? Not to mention, the dress she is wearing in her pic of her in a coffin is probably designer. Couldn't that amount go to those suffering of AIDS?

(I do donate to some causes when I can, but I hate the preachiness of it all, I guess)

External Image

“I’m digitally dying tonight. Please buy my life back! Let’s save lives! I will miss you!” A “last tweet” of sorts from Kim Kardashian.

This World AIDS Day, Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites will be especially quiet. Celebrities like Usher, Lady Gaga, Ryan Seacrest and at least a dozen others have pledged to remain digitally silent until $1 million is raised to provide support to children and families affected by AIDS.

I'm not a fan of hers anyway (though I don't know exactly what she's famous for) but that pic is revolting. It's just something else to get attention.

If I had a million bucks to spare, and if it meant she'd move to Idaho FOREVER, I'd gladly give.

I wonder how much money it cost to do that photoshoot, dress, coffin, makeup, hair, photoshopping, and promotional materials for all this.

Yes I know it's a good cause - but it just seems like sometimes celebrities think they have to do something unique & creative to get people to do stuff. I don't need to "digitally revive" a single celebrity to want to help a cause. If anything, maybe we should all donate so these idiots can S T F U

I'd rather pay to keep certain celebs from tweeting, not necessarily to end a tweet-strike. Chat Icon

But I like to think that celebrities donate more then we will ever be aware of and that it's their prerogative to keep it private.

You guys bring up some good points. I would assume the people behind the photoshoot get paid, no?

and Christine, I agree that many probably do donate a lot behind closed doors (but then it's a write-off, right?)

I just don't know.

i think its narcissistic of them to assume the general population can't live without their tweets and will all donate $1 so they can finally read their tweets again. It certainly does nothing to personally motivate me.

I think it's assinine. Pretending to be dead so someone will donate a dollar, which goes to some organization which gives money to orphanages in Africa isn't an AIDS charity I would donate to in the first place. How about the Elizabeth Glaser Foundation, or Gay Men's Health Crisis, or amFAR etc??

The pic is so narcissistic. All glammed up and beautiful laying in a coffin. Makes me ill.

Re: Nervousnell's post - a spinoff..how is THIS going to help? Narcissism or a brilliant idea?

I think it's just a way to get more people to contribute. These celebs may well give a metric ton of money to various causes - but the number of celebs pales in comparison to the number of 'real' folks out there. And even if nobody revives her tweeting.. there is a higher level of awareness made due to this kind of weird campaign. Awareness is huge.

I guess the true barometer will be how much money the campaign raises. If she gets a good chunk of change.. then I'll applaud her and the person who came up with the idea!

Pretending to be dead so someone will donate a dollar,

The organizers and critics are saying part of the problem is that you can't just donate a dollar. It is 10 dollars minimum. So their 'excuse' is the economy is bad and people are spending on the holidays and cant spare 10. If they could do a dollar or two then the overall total would be much higher.

100% agree..

In fact the O/P is right on IMO, its disgusting that these celebrities cant ban together and do it themselves....and create more buzz a different way, this was just dumb!

I would like to think that the services for these ads were donated (its not just Kardashian but a whole campaign) Most of the time for non profit clients these sorts of things are done for free or for a nominal fee.

However, i think the entire campaign is ridiculous. I would gladly pay $10 to never have another celebrity twitter ever again. Chat Icon I could give a flying f*ck what garbage kim kardashian, justin beiber or sarah palin spews out on a daily basis.
It's just so narcissistic of these celebrities to think that anyone cares about them that much that we'd donate money to get their tweets back.
Like i said, i'd rather pay $ to never see most of them again!

If you want to raise $$ there are plenty of other ways to do it and still use celebrities to get the public's interest.
It's a bit insulting to actual dead people to think that just because a celeb isn't tweeting that they're dead! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Nervousnell's post - a spinoff..how is THIS going to help? Narcissism or a brilliant idea?

If they care so much, why don't they just donate and call it a day?

This is like the "post your bra color on facebook to stop breast can cer..or domestic violence..or colors running. or whatever it was.

ETA: I think anyone who has had a friend or loved on die from AIDS related illness can tell you they didn't look that fabulous and sparkly when they died. I find it all disgusting.
