New Group - Stop Common Core Suffolk County!!!!
I am really working to fight Common Core for our children. As part of the larger group, Stop Common Core in NY, came a need for a more localized group so we can organize better. Born of that need is our new page - Stop Common Core in NY - Suffolk County. Please join and help us return common sense to NY schools. We are hoping this page supports the bottom-up-grass roots effort that it is going to take to put a stop to this. This page/group is in its infancy but we hope it to be a place to go to share/gather information, to get involved and to have discussions about the new common core and what can be done. Please join and share our message with other Suffolk County parents. http://www.facebook.com/groups/471378579644217/471379479644127/?notif_t=like

Not yet, that I know of. The Suffolk page isn't necessarily district/town based, just a way to make sense of all of the people on the state group page. Please feel free to join for local information.

Re: New Group - Stop Common Core Suffolk County!!!!
We don't have common core here in Texas
However.. that said.. I'm not sure I want to say I'm totally ok with that as the only 'reasoning' I've heard is sorta party line crap I don't actually buy into.
SO for those of us outside the box, what are some reasons against Common Core?

Watch the video mentioned above for starters. There are too many problems with it to list here BUT:
It bases everything on standardized testing (both your child's efficiency in school, as well as your child's teacher's efficiency). This basically forces teachers to teach specifically to the test, which results in a not very well rounded education for students. "It's one size fits all" if you will, w/ little regard for special needs students-you can now ONLY get a regents diploma.
The modules being used are basically scripts for teachers, and many contain questionable, not age appropriate content.
Testing starts in first grade...they are training K kids to fill in bubbles!
It takes the power away from the teachers to decide how best to teach his/her students.
Pearson, the company that makes the tests and pretty much everything else associated with CC will make TONs of money, and the worse kids do, the more money they make bc they also make all the materials to "help" kids
The tests being given were created for the kids to fail. It puts a tremendous amount of stress on kids to do well, and then they fail anyway.

Re: New Group - Stop Common Core Suffolk County!!!!
My DD is in second grade and I am just getting into this whole common core business and trying to educate myself on it.
When you say The tests being given were created for the kids to fail. It puts a tremendous amount of stress on kids to do well, and then they fail anyway.
What do you mean by this? is this factual that these tests are going to absolutely fail our kids?
Thanks

No, I'm sorry, that was a generalization. From what I've heard, the tests given at then end of last year were on things that kids weren't taught/very hard, and so districts were told to expect a lot of kids to fail...and a lot of kids did, in fact, fail. I believe that the same is to be expected for the next few years as all this common core is implemented.
ETA: Even though parents and kids were warned that they would probably do poorly, it's still terrible if you are the kid that spent endless hours preparing for a test, only to know you aren't even expected to do well.
I'm definitely no expert on this matter, so I hope someone else jumps in to better explain.

Re: New Group - Stop Common Core Suffolk County!!!!
Thanks for clarifying. I thought the reason they were expected to fail on that round of tests was because it was the first roll out and they had not spent enough time dealing with and learning the common core program in order to do well and that those kids who started with common core will then do better in the test because they will be used to it...I could be wrong but thats the sound byte I got from it.
Again I need to research more and more on this but is the main opposition against it because parents of children who struggle with school will feel added pressure from these tests because in effect there is no way they could possibly pass or succeed in these tests? That a teacher who could have taught 24 kids well before and catered more or less "a la carte" to these kids will now be teaching them all using a set menu with no scope to help a child that might need help. Therefore that child is going to be left behind. Is this really what's going to happen? Are teachers in general against common core? Is this going to mean in the long run that if a child is struggling in school that he or she is not going to get the adequate help from his teacher because she is following the common core? Sorry...questions, questions..would love some teachers to jump in here with their opinions.
TIA

Re: New Group - Stop Common Core Suffolk County!!!!
It is detrimental to all kids, not just those who already struggle (though it is worse for them). Even the kids that get it from the start of their school career will suffer, since, from my understanding, it is not developmentally age appropriate material...as in, there is no way kids in 1st grade can grasp the concepts they want them to-therefore they will do poorly, need "help" and Pearson will make big $$$.
Definitely join this FB page, and check out Lace to The Top, on FB as well. They are very informative.
ETa: all the teachers I know are against common core, though some have been scared into silence by administrators.

All of the above. Common Core is a for profit curriculum (i.e. Pearson, EScholar, etc). The curriculum itself is flawed and not age appropriate. The testing is excessive, and also used to evaluate teachers on a poorly implemented program. It is crushing to the children as they are set up to fail (King himself has said so). There is also the potential for data mining with all of the children's records being uploaded to a cloud known as inBloom. I could go on and on and on.
I highly recommend watching this video, that was mentioned above http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzTsFxmtoiY&feature=youtu.be
As well as the 5 part videos here. http://stopccssinnys.com/Videos.html

Re: New Group - Stop Common Core Suffolk County!!!!
I'm all for a rigorous, higher level thinking curriculum but much of the common core is developmentally inappropriate.

I am not against common core. Common core is a set of standards, NOT curriculum. Yes, curriculum is based on standards. Yes, Pearson AND scholastic are making crap tons of money on our kids - esp when they fail. So the powers that be regarding testing and those companies are the ones who get me in a huff. Not common core. Common core learning standards (corestandards.org) are designed to get our kids to be college and career ready and competitive world wide. They need that!!! In my honest opinion - it is not CCLS that's the problem. Standardized tests are.

No, it is not the curriculum specifically, it is the standards to which the curriculum is based. For instance, NY uses the engageNY module, but it is aligned with the standards set by common core. The testing of these curriculums aligned with these standards ARE common core driven (PARCC). The lengthy PARCC tests will be rolled out in the 2014-2015 year and will be administered in April and AGAIN in June.
This is a Gates funded and Corporate profit driven reform, the curriculum is just one piece of a MUCH larger issue with Common Core (the umbrella which all of the pieces fall under).

Maybe you misunderstood me? I know what common core is - my point is that people really should not be against standards that demand more of our kids, but of the TESTING. It's two separate entities - governors created CCLS, NYS created the common core ALIGNED tests.
I am a teacher, coach, and teacher educator. Testing is the issue everyone needs to get behind and rally against.

From what I heard, it's certificates, but not specifically a diploma...so when they are filling out applications that ask if they have a high school diploma, will they be able to say yes and provide one? If yes, than that's great bc that's not what I heard, and I think it's horrible if what I heard was true.

I agree. I have more of an issue with all of the testing, and really the appr that was rolled out at the same time. I feel like appr is driving testing more than common core.
