New to Suffolk-- Town of Huntington people
..Please don't move to Home. This board gets more traffic at night.
Just moved to Greenlawn and need to know where I can go to get recycling bins and when the hell our trash getse collected. We moved in and they weren't here and the no one ever picks up the phone # listed on the website.
Also, do you all recommend any sort of beach pass or park pass or do I even need one of those? How much?
Anything else i need to do?
Do I do all this at the same office? Where is this office located!
TIA!! I would like to try to get this sutff done tomorrow.

If you want a beach permit, you need your car registeration and license and it's $25 for the seaon (or $10 for the day). You can just go to any of the beaches and they'll give you the sticker/permit when you pull up to the booth in the parking lot. If you're in Greenlawn, then Centerport Beach is probably the closest to you.
You can use regular garbage cans for recycling. They don't necessarily have to be blue. If you want a recycling sticker to put on a can, you can get them at Town Hall, the Hunt. Public Library (Main St in HV) or the recycling ctr on NY Ave. We don't have the recycling sticker on our cans and they still take our recycling.

Other things you may need to do:
Do you have dogs? Then they'll need to be registered with the town, which can be done at Town Hall.
Do you have kids? Any interest in the library? Then you'll need to stop in and get your library card(s) at the Harborfields or Elwood Library. (Depending on where you live.)

We're in Elwood... sadly, it looks like they don't have much of a library... it's this tiny storefront on Rt. 25, i tihnk i saw it. Can i use Harborfields library on Broadway?

Nassau. I grew up in RVC and Baldwin and lived in Baldwin again right before I got married. Then we rented in Franlin Square for about a year and here we are. DH grew up in Smithtown, but Suffolk is like a foreign country to me!

Welcome!
One other thing...
If you go to the Library to get the recycling stickers, they should be able to give you a calendar with all the pickups for your area. That's where we got ours.

I think all towns require that your dog have a license. BUT most people don't do it.
ETA: you need a current rabies certificate to do so!!!

Re: New to Suffolk-- Town of Huntington people
YEAH! Welcome!!
We have a little blue recycling bin that the former owners had, but my stuff never fits, so I put it in whatever (even plastic bags, which they say you shouldn't, but the guys always take it) You are Tuesday/Friday Trash Collection and weds are recycling (this coming wed, 8/13, is plastics/bottles - the next week will be paper) You can go to the libraries or town hall to get the calendar (it will be mailed to you in subsequent years) - too bad thesellers didn't leave it for you. GArbage collection is at the crack of dawn for me (just before 6), so make sure you get it out the night before, until you know when they come.
If you want one of the real recycling bins, Greenlawn Hardware on Broadway/RR sells them - I have been thinking about getting one, since I want something bigger and short like that.
Centerport Beach is probably the closet, but it's a bit rocky but it does have a lot to offer. I like to go to Crab Meadow in Npt for less rocks (for the kids)
Town Hall is on 25A just east of Huntington Village (take Park Ave north until you reach the Community Arts Center and make that next left - there are tons of signs)
I remember as a kid, before the Elwood library was built that the Elwood residents could use the HF library for an annual fee - I wonder if that is still the case? 757-4200 is HF library and they are super nice and helpful.

If HF does this, definitely do it! It's a great library with a lot to offer!!!
FWIW, Elwood is moving their library to the corner of Elwood & Jericho. Still small though in comprarison to the HF library (To give you an idea of its size, it's going where a Blockbuster store used to be.)

Do you plan on using any of the Huntington train stations? You'll need a commuter permit/sticker to park there (different from the beach permit.) Again, that can be obtained at Town Hall or you can do it online/mailin. It's $30.

Thanks SOO much for all the info. Do I need this pass if we use the Greenlawn station as well? DH commutes to Jamaica, so we'll see which works best, but we're thinking Greenlawn and Huntington stations will be the ones we use.
How is parking? Do you have to get there at the crack of dawn? Although he teaches HS, he teaches later periods, so he doesn't have to be there until 9 AM.

Re: New to Suffolk-- Town of Huntington people
yes - you need a pass for the Glawn station as well and they do ticket there! Greenlawn is EMPTY (on the B side)! I think most people go to Hunt that live in Greenlawn (since Northport has many more cars), so there are maybe 50-100 cars there on a given day.
Huntington has overflow parking - so there will always be a spot, but DH goes on the 822 and he can almost always get a spot on the B side parking garage.

Re: New to Suffolk-- Town of Huntington people
There is also a free lot behind the Stationery Store (corner of Bway and Smith Street) that you don't need a commuter pass for.
At this late stage in the Summer, it might not be worth it to get a beach pass (you only need one until Labor Day), but if you think you'll want to go, get it and you can get into any of the many Town Beaches. Each one is very different. I grew up in Centerport, so that's my home beach, but the others are also good.

Re: New to Suffolk-- Town of Huntington people
Thank you everyone! this information is invaluable!
today, i got my library card, my recylcing can stickers, my license renewed with the new address and registered at the parish -- all under 2 hours! in nassau, i would still be at the DMV!
ETA: What other Roman Catholic parishes are in the area? We registered at St. Francis of Assisi in Greenlawn, that is the closest and I'm sure we'll be there mainly, but what other ones are around and does anyone know Mass times? I like to know my sleeping-in options on Sundays!

In Centerport there's Our Lady Queen of Martyrs'.
If you have kids, you might want to look into Camp Alvernia in Centerport for the summer.

OLQM is my family's parish. We love it there and the pastor, Msgr Ryan, is wonderful. They also have an adult choir that sings at the 11 on Sundays (used to be the 1115 mass but I think the times have changed).
St. Patricks in Huntington has Sunday evening masses (530 in the basement, and 7pm in the upper church).
St. Philip Neri in Northport Village.

Re: New to Suffolk-- Town of Huntington people
There was some controversy at St Francis after 9/11 and a lot of people left to go to OLQM or St Phillip Neri
