new years day my entire family (including aunts, uncles, cousins, etc) meets up in Chinatown for dinner and then we all walk to Little Italy for dessert. we like to make sure we start off the new year with family. I love it!!!!

Re: new year's eve/new year's day traditions??
We also do the 12 grapes.
And my bff's mom used to take the name of the person who bugged her the most the past year, write it down and burn the paper. She said that once she did that, the person would no longer bother her. ok...

Re: new year's eve/new year's day traditions??
I like that grape idea! I may have to steal it!
We go shopping on NYE to make sure the cupboards aren't bare - that way we will not go hungry in the new year. I also have to have a couple of silver coins in my wallet and Rob's - so that our wallets are full all year long.
We don't work, do laundry or wash dishes on New Year's Day - but we do feast at my sister's house and always have black eyed peas to honor my Southern roots.
That's all I remember - oh and pancakes - we eat pancakes for breakfast... but only because I like them and we always have done it!

Re: new year's eve/new year's day traditions??
the one i've always done that my dad taught me is to always be holding some money at midnight... my dad says it brings you good luck with money in the coming year. hes been doing it forever, and its worked for him... so i figure its worth a shot
new years day is my birthday, so usually at midnight our friends who are at the party with us sing happy birthday to me and we have cake, too

Re: new year's eve/new year's day traditions??
12/31 - spend all day getting ready i.e. working out, spending too much time on my hair, forgetting to eat and then getting drunk really early on in the night. Before anyone else is drunk.
1/1- wake up in the afternoon, debate whether or not I'm going to be able to work out, then eat lots of crap because I'm not working out, declare the day a bust and that resolutions to be healthier actually begin on January 2.
But I want to make lasagna on New Year's Day just because and make that a tradition. Someone said that it's good luck to do that, but I just think that it's delicious.

I never heard of the grape thing - that's so cute.
The only real tradition my family has is that for New Year's Day we eat Lentil soup - supposedly, it's good luck for the upcoming year?

Re: new year's eve/new year's day traditions??
Since I am in High School, I have had New Years Eve parties at my parents home and now in our own.
New Years Day: My parents, Sister, Nephew, Sisters BF and inlaws all come to a sit down dinner.
I do like the grape idea..Oooh and the money one too.

DH & I stay home on NYE. I make finger foods, and we have a few drinks (maybe more than a few). We listen to music and play board games all night. The more we drink, the more fun the games are.

We do this too! I just made a pork roast to dice up into the soup. Supposedly its because lentils are round it signifies prosperity???
I like that grape thing too! Does it originate in any paticular nationality or religion?

Are you Portugese? I had a neighbor when I was younger who was Portugese and she introduced us to this custom from her Country.
My grandmother would always put $1 under the front door mat, so that money would always be coming into our door

Re: new year's eve/new year's day traditions??
New Years Eve: We stay home ... make lots of appetizers ... drink a little champagne ... watch TV. At midnight ... if the kids are still awake ... we give them pots and pans and wooden spoons. They bang on them like a drum and yell "Happy New Year".
On New Years Day, we usually go to my parents for dinner or just stay home and relax.

Up until about 4 years ago, we always had just immediate family at my Moms house........as we got older it always included a few friends!
Now......we all usually head over to a close cousins house........which is fun....but I do miss hanging around Moms watching the Honeymooners with my Dad!!

Re: new year's eve/new year's day traditions??
New Years Eve is Christmas Eve all over again except with my mothers side of the family. We have all the fish, pasta just tons of delicious italian food. We all look forward to NYE because it is all the aunts, uncles, cousins, kids all together (about 35-40 of us)and we just have the best time!!!!!!!
After the ball drops, we all play Tombola (italian version of bingo) and the food all comes out again!!

Re: new year's eve/new year's day traditions??
NYE - We always go to the city for dinner with two other couples. Either a restaurant or our friends apartment. If we go to a restaurant we then go back to our friends place for dessert and drinks to ring in the new year.
New Years Day - I used to go to my parents, but we live too far now. So usually we sit on the couch all day eating crap and watching the Twilight Zone Marathon
