newbie runner questions
So I need to lose a lot of weight (50 lbs) and I know I have to start excersicing. I want to run. Last year I was doing couch to 5k and was upto like week 5 when I just stopped. Now I want to do this seriously. Should I start walking first? I want to do it outside since the weather is warm, probably early morning. Do I need special gear? shoes? Also, I was getting bored with the couch to 5k music. Is there a more recent podcast?
TIA.

Re: newbie runner questions
I would start with week 1 of the Couch 2 5k and repeat that until you're comfortable to move on to the next week. Good shoes are sooooo important! I definitely recommend going to a running store and get fitted for good sneakers. I go to The Runners Edge in Farmingdale and they're great. The prices aren't too bad either, my Asics are under $100. It's been really hot out, so I suggest bringing a water bottle or getting a belt that holds one. I never used the pod casts, just held a stop watch and listened to my own music. But I'm sure they have newer ones. Good luck!

Re: newbie runner questions
Like the above poster said definitely jump right back into c25k from week one and repeat each week until you feel ready to move on to the next. I am "fluffy" (I like that word better then the f word) and doing c25k myself. I use the c25k app where you can use your own music. Way better then music on the podcast. Also will tell you when to run and went to walk so you are not constantly looking at your watch.
You can do it!

Re: newbie runner questions
I just ran my first 10k in May (Long Island Marathon races). I skipped right over the 5k because I was feeling ambitious.
Prior to that, I was overweight and a half a pack a day smoker. In the past 2 years I've really gotten myself into awesome shape. But I really started training to run in December.
I followed my own made up plan. I first worked on running a mile, then increased it to a mile and a half, then two miles, etc. Now I can run 10 miles without stopping and I'm training for my first half.
Just focus on gradually increasing your distance. Also, work on your leg muscles and cross training.
I would highly reccomend a running watch, although they can be a bit pricey.
Good luck!
