Newborn & Time between Feedings
How do you calculate the time between feedings?
Say DC eats from 2-2:30. What would be 2 hours later - 4 or 4:30?

I'm not sure if the answer is different with formula feeding, but for BFing, you base it on when DC first starts eating. It doesn't matter how long it takes for DC to finish eating. In your example, 2 hours later would be 4:00.

Re: Newborn & Time between Feedings
In the hospital they wanted me to go by when he began eating. Once I got home though..it's whenever he cries for more food or starts rooting at my arm or sucks his hand, thats when I feed him. Sometimes it's 2-3 hours after he starts, sometimes after he finishes. Sometimes it's an hour.... I go by him though.

Re: Newborn & Time between Feedings
Thank you!
I was counting from when he ended...
My DS eats constantly, but I think sometimes he's not hungry and just wants to be soothed so I'm working on that...but this is good to know

No I don't....but I have been successful soothing him by rocking him or bouncing him in his chair...
But i went to a BF class today and they said I may be overfeeding him when he eats hourly because he is gaining a lot of weight

If your pediatrician isn't concerned, I wouldn't worry about it. From what I've read, babies don't overeat. He may be using you as a pacifier though. Does he seem satisifed after he eats? Unless he's going through a growth spurt, he probably should have longer stretches between feedings. DS used to nurse for 45+ minutes. He'd eat every 2-3 hours so it seemed like I never got a break. It's really tough at the beginning, but it will get better.
Have you tried to use a pacifier or are you against it? I didn't want to use one at first, but DS ended up in the NICU and they use them there. I'm glad we used a pacifier b/c I don't think I could've dealt with the long nursing sessions and then being used as a pacifier. DS doesn't use it all of the time, but it definitely helps calm him.
