I'm bumping for you...I'd like to know this as well.
My dh bought me a 55-200 lens and it takes great pics. I'm just looking to see if anyone else has any more input!

Re: nikon slr moms
I want to know this too! Also- can any lens be used on a d50? I was going to upgrade my camera this year, but if I can just get a new lens and use it on the d50 I might wait to upgrade.

I have the D50 for now. I chose to upgrade my lenses last year as opposed to getting a new camera. The lenses I use most often are my 18-200 mm VR and my 50 mm f/1.4 (non-zoom prime lens). I also have a 70-300 mm and an 28-80 mm that I hardly use anymore. I am looking at another prime lens, either a 35 mm or an 85 mm.
To answer OP, if you had to pick a new lens, look into a prime lens (50 mm). While I think the 18-200 mm VR is a perfect all around lens, it its expensive and heavy.

Re: nikon slr moms
For the price you cant go wrong with the 35mm AF-S prime lens. It's in the $200-$250 price range and is a great little lens.
The D40,D50,D60 all require an AF-S lens in order to autofocus...in laymans terms the "motor" which does the autofocusing needs to be in the lens b/c it's not in the camera...
They also make a 50mm AF-S which is also a dynamite lens. It is more costly and is in the $450 price range. If you have a D70 or higher and your camera doesnt require an AF-S lens Nikon makes a fantastic 50mm AF lens for around $125 that cant be beat...
You then have the 18-200mm AF-S Zoom lens. It's my go to lens when I am shooting my own children at the beach, park, school assemblies, etc. It gives me the range that I need and allows me to stand back and let them be themselves.
Basically you need to look at what your needs are.

I also have the D50 and these 2 lenses. I love both of them! I know you didn't ask but a speedlight(like the SB-600) is also great and will really change how great your indoor photos look. So if you don't have one of those yet maybe think about getting one. Here are some pictures with those lenes and my speedlight(on the pictures done indoors), you can click on a picture and look to the right for "more properties" to see what lens I used for the picture:

The D50 does not need AF-S lenses. It has the internal "motor". My 50 mm is a 1:1.4 D lens. One of the few lower model cameras with this function, which is why I've kept it and upgraded the lenses first.

Re: nikon slr moms
For me, it depends what you're looking to use it for.
If you're interested in taking more portraits, I'd opt for the 50mm, f/1.4G. Downside: the 50 mm is a set distance, which means no zooming in and you'll be stepping back to fit them in the frame if you're too close. You will get used to it - I know with my 70-300mm (the lens I shot the DebG shoots with), I always had to step back.
If you're looking for a more versatile lens, the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 is great. Of course the downside of this lense is you cannot go lower than a 3.5 f-stop. However, this is my favorite lens for the photos I shoot (toddlers on the go outdoors, soccer games, school plays) . (For the record that's the lens you all chipped in to surprise me.) I also have a D90 so when I'm forced to shoot at a higher ISO, I don't have a lot of graininess. Lower cameras (D40, D50) may have a problem with it.
If you're local & want to try my lenses in the park one day, let me know.
