Non political funny observation
So I was driving to the train early this morning and the high school kids were all out at the bus stops along my route. It was raining and I noticed them all standing there getting soaked wearing just hoodies. I was thinking of how gross and uncomfortable it must be to have to sit in school half they day with wet hair and a soaked sweatshirt. And the girls with their hair looking like a drowned rat by the time they get to school. And yet, they would NEVER EVER consider an umbrella- how uncool!
And in the winter, it can be the polar vortex and 10 degrees outside- and there they are at the bus stop with just a hoodie on. Apparently winter coats are uncool too?
So I was thinking- how many years does it last where you are so concerned with being cool that you trade in all means of comfort- no umbrellas, scarves, hats, gloves, even coats?
Only high school? Junior high too? Once you get to college is an umbrella ok?
It's really funny if you think about it....

Non political funny observation
I teach HS. Very few kids wear heavy jackets to school even when it is like -20 with the wind chill. I am AMAZED. At my school, it is because most don't use their locker and do not feel like carrying it with them the entire day. It baffles me!!! I will say, I do have a decent number of female students who at least have a rain jacket and rain boots. I also notice that many parents in my area drive their kids to the bus stop so they are not waiting in the cold/rain that long. Granted, I always have a coat in my car no matter what the weather in case I break down.

Re: Non political funny observation
I fight with my daughter regularly about weather appropriate attire. I am going to make a chart with 'this temperature -> this jacket' or she would go coatless in December.
In my district umbrellas are not allowed on buses. When DD was in elementary school all the parents waited in the cars and then walked the kids under umbrellas to get them on the bus. Now that they are in intermediate school, they hop out of the cars and run for the bus without us. Not sure if that policy changes for middle and HS.

I still don't wear a heavy coat in the winter. I go from my car to the train to the subway to my building and never really come above ground and then do the reverse so if I was in school all day and only outside for a few minutes I probably wouldn't have a coat as a student.

Re: Non political funny observation
I hate wearing winter gear too. I was considering open toed sandals today but the rain forced me into pumps. And I Hate it.
I try not to break out my winter coat until AT LEAST December. I have to scramble to find a scarf and gloves most times when it's freezing. I just hate winter gear and I hate hate hate bulk and being all bundled up.
So I hear it.
But standing at the bus stop when it's like 10 degrees with a -10 wind chill.... I think I'd want something a LITTLE thicker than a hooded sweatshirt. Even if it's only for 10 minutes
But I know it's not cool

I know in winter time, both my kids will not wear a heavy coat because it takes up too much room in their locker and they can't fit anything else. At least, that's the story they give me. Both wear a North face.
Any my high schooler will bring an umbrella to the bus stop, but when she gets on the bus she folds it up and stashed it under the tree. Then when I leave for work I retrieve it. She won't bring it to school.
