Re: Non TTC related.. anyone ever had wisdom teeth pulled??

I had all four removed at the same time when I was 18 and my parents were in Europe for the summer visiting my brother. So i was all alone.

I will be honest, I had a horrible experience, but ONLY because they got infected. I am so glad I got all four out at once, that way I never had to worry about it again.

I know a lot of people who have gotten them removed, and I am the only one that had any problems. It is certainly not fun, but you will be fine. Chat Icon

Re: Non TTC related.. anyone ever had wisdom teeth pulled??

ok if you want honesty....here goes....I've had it done twice- now let me say I am VERY sensitive to having teeth pulled, even my best friend who's a nurse said she's never seen anyone react the way I did.....so think of me as an extreme case. All 3 wisdom teeth I had pulled were impacted, which makes a difference in what the surgery is like.

The first time I had it done I had two pulled- my face was swollen for at least 3-4 days! My cheek turned purple, yellow, blue....you name it, I looked horrible. I didn't go to work for like 3 days they thought I was being a wuss from the pain, but it was more cosmetic for me, and the fact I couldn't talk properly b/c of the swelling.

The second time I only had 1 pulled since the other wisdom tooth for some reason has no roots and will never grow (I guess I was lucky!).....the 2nd time around was worse! My face was swollen for probably 5 days and overall it took longer for me to heal, I don't know if its b/c I went to a different oral surgeon or what, but it was much worse.

Sorry to be so brutally honest, but hopefully you don't experience the swelling and discomfort for the length of time I did!! Stock up on pudding, jello and mashed potatoes....that's all I could eat afterwards. Chat Icon

ETA- the vicodin made me feel dizzy and sick, so I only took it for 1 day. oh and as much as I hoped to be put out for the surgery, the surgeon told me "don't be a baby" and said I could handle it with only getting novacaine! So I had like 8 shots!! b/c of the teeth being impacted, he had to cut my gums so that might have made it worse too....and the pulling during surgery was definitely the worst part! I'm a big wuss too so if I could handle it than I'm sure you can too! Chat Icon

Re: Non TTC related.. anyone ever had wisdom teeth pulled??

I got all 4 taken out when I was in college...a word of advice give yourself some recovery time after! I did it over a break and had to go back to school and was completely out of it! My face was swollen the the vicoden made me not be able to focus! It was uncomfortable and i couldn't eat much. I was happy i got out all 4 so that it was all over and done with!

That being said I do know people who had it done w/ very limited swelling and pain.

Good luck!

Re: Non TTC related.. anyone ever had wisdom teeth pulled??

I had my 2 bottom ones pulled at the same time in high school. I was out of school for a week and had a vomitting reaction to vicodin. It was a MISERABLE week. I couldn't eat anything unless I sipped it through a straw and I was in a lot of pain. My chin and cheeks were so swollen I put Marlon Brando in the Godfather to shame.

They were impacted and I had novicaine, a valium IV and the gas Chat Icon Chat Icon

Honestly De, if I were you, I would get all 4 out at once. That way you are done with the whole thing. If you do 2 and 2 you are not going to want to go back.

I am in the minority but I really wasn't in that much pain. The vicodin that they gave I didn't even need.....

I did go to a specialist - not my regular dentist. Maybe that is what everyone does though -

Re: Non TTC related.. anyone ever had wisdom teeth pulled??

OK De here's a good story. I totally forgot to tell you this.. My DH and I had our first date the day he got 2 wisdom teeth pulled. We were supposed to go out on thursday but I changed it to Tuesday and He didn't want to have to change the date again.. so he came. I didn't notice anything.. he didn't tell me until months after!!!!

He had a great experience. And they give you antibiotics in case of infection.

It relaxes you...puts you in a little bit of a funk...and you really don't "realize" what's going on, even though you're somewhat aware...it's actually kinda funky.

They can turn it up and down so maybe the 1st time you were administered it they didn't give you a lot...

I would definitely discuss pain options with them, especially if they're impacted because that's a lot more than just pulling them out, KWIM?

2 TOTALLY different things.

Novicaine will just numb the area
Sweet air will make you loopy!

Re: Non TTC related.. anyone ever had wisdom teeth pulled??

De--for the sweet air--the key is you have to breathe in and our VERY DEEPLY only thru your NOSE....NEVER thru your mouth. if you breathe thru your mouth--it will weakn the effect of the sweet air.

i am the most fearful dental patient on this earth--i had 2 root canals and the doc used the sweet air to the max. Chat Icon he made sure to tell me "DO NOT breathe thru your mouth!" and i listened--i barely even felt the prick of the needle when he gave me the novacaine. then he let me just sit there and breathe the air for about 3-5 min. while the novacaine took effect--and i breathed the air the entire time he was working on my mouth...again...nose only. it worked like a charm!

Hey Hun! I had 2 of my wisdom teeth pulled (also both on the same side) and I went bridesmaid dress shopping the nxt day!! it wasn't bad at all (I was also put to sleep for it and medicated the next day). I was honestly fine until i got dry socket- now that is some painful shittt!!! Just follow your doctors orders- no smoking after, sucking on anything (straws, penisChat Icon ) and you should be fine!!

GOOD LUCKChat Icon
