Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
what are your thoughts? i do not support it and am pleased levy is trying to get a law passed to draw the line somewhere. It seems so greedy to tear employees away from their families to increase a profit margin. In the old days, if you forgot cranberry sauce, you just didnt have it...no biggie.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
I can see a supermarket being open for the morning, liquor store & bakery the same but I think they should all be closed early. I think the fact that stores are starting to open earlier and earlier on black Friday is insane! The ones that are open all day thanksgiving are even worse! The employees should get to enjoy the holiday too! I'm also someone who thinks the Xmas season shouldn't start until Friday too.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
Personally I think its disgusting that many of the retail stores are open. No one needs anything that badly that they cant wait until the next day.
I mean is getting " performance fleece" that inportant at Old Navy for example on Thanksgiving. I feel bad for the workers in all these stores.
The line has to be drawn somewhere before all the holidays disappear

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
I agree that they shouldn't be open. The real reason they do open is that to many people go shopping on that day. If the people stayed home there would be no incentive for the stores to open and maybe the trend could be reversed. No one needs to go shopping 365 days a year.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
Someone is trying to pass a law to outlaw opening stores on Thanksgiving? Talk about the Government putting its nose where it doesn't belong!
As PP said, if there is demand for it, it will happen. I don't think it's disgusting... if a store is doing it, they're making money that day and staying in business, and, in turn keeping its employees on staff.

I was surprised to see Michaels is going to be open today. How many people "need" craft supplies on thanksgiving. I dont think they should pass a law though. It's not only stores, Restaurants and movie theaters are open today too. I don't know where they can draw the line of what can open and what can't.

I don't think there is a shortage of workers that actually want to work on thanksgiving. I believe most stores pay double time and I know quite a few folks that jump at the chance for extra money. Most people don't eat until late in the day. I think it's a win win for everyone involved. The consumer that wants a good deal, the store that is making money, and the employee that is getting paid a lot more than a regular day. Those that are disgusted just don't shop, so it's really not a big deal.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
I am actually saddened by it. Like another poster, I think supermarkets are a given. But they should close early.
But retail stores? There is NO need. It's a holiday. A time for families.
And people wonder why our priorities are messed up! We value shopping over family.

What about the restaurants that are open today? How do you feel about that? Does anyone ever really feel bad that someone is serving them food because they chose to eat out instead of stay home, and they aren't with their family? I can say from personal experience that when I had to work T-day at Milleridge Inn, people treated me horribly, as if I weren below them because I was serving them food on T-day.

But whose demand really is it? Is it the American public clamoring for the day to shop, or is it the stores/marketing campaigns that showcase all the incredible deals and savings one could have if they only left their house on T-day to take part?
It is an artificial demand perpetrated by greedy corporations.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
IDK, when I firt started reading the posts here I agreed it was sort of a turn off for retailers to be open just to make $$, I think it's uneccessary. What if employees want off but they have to work.
But I don't see what is wrong with a grocery/liquor store/bakery being open earlier in the day since many Thanksgiving days I've had to pick up something last minute.
Yes restaurant owners realize there are someone/many people especially in a place like LI/NYC that want to eat out.
What about the gym? I remember LA Fitness is open until later, should they close too?
I agree that passing a law is absolutely silly, what a waste of time and money.
Although *I* don't agree with it, we live in a capitalist society, money is to be made!!!

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
I completely agree and was happy when I heard it on the news this morning. It's really not fair to have employees work on a day that's meant for family. It is kind of disturbing in a way because they only care about themselves and profit.
There are some professions though that do need to be open and I always think about those people as I am also one of them. I never get a holiday off. I've worked every Thanksgiving for as long as I can remember, but I'm in a profession where it is definitely worth it to change lives. Doctors, nurses, hospitals, police officers, our men and service woman, healthcare all work no matter what day it is. That's why I think it's upsurd to open a retail store on Thanksgiving. Does it have a need to be open!? No way!!!!

This demand is around all the time though, I don't see it being greater on Thanksgiving? Black Friday, opening stores at midnight, etc is the same thing to me, I see no difference between that and being open on Thanksgiving Day. IMO they are both ridiculous, but if people want it it's there!

So some people don't care about the double pay; they would rather spend the day with their loved ones. It's not really a win-win for some. Most people that I know that work on Thanksgiving hate doing so.

That surprises me because most people I know that work retail today love the extra money and the fact that they close early enough to be home with family for dinner.
Do you work retail?

Nope. I work with the mentally ill. I love what I do and I really feel like I make a difference with what I do but working Thanksgiving really stinks sometimes even if I do get out early.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
I don't think they should be open, not even supermarkets, maybe certain supermarkets, but not all. The only thing that should be open are bakeries, restaurants, and movie theatres.
I really have no argument, but I can say that I live in a country where almost EVERYTHING is closed EVERY Sunday. If I need something from the supermarket, oh well, I can go to the train station and pay double the price for it. At first, I didn't like this, but now I love it. I can just relax on a Sunday. Saturdays are super busy for me, trying to food shop etc, but Sundays . Super relaxing, very quiet, etc.
I think closing things for holidays isn't too much to ask.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
I was really surprised to see Waldbaum's by me is open from 9 to 5. I think 5pm is really excessive. If you don't have it by 5pm, you probably didn't really want it or need it for dinner.
I wonder if some stores stay open thinking that customers will come to them since they are the only game in town to go to. That being said, I have no plans to go anywhere today. I like the feeling of slowing down and staying at home.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
eh, honestly, my DH is working today... my parents (whose house i was at for t-giving for the past 30 years) are in maryland with my sister and her family... so i appreciate the fact that the stores are open. it gives me something to do besides unpacking in our new house, and takes my mind off the fact that i won't be having my mom's turkey dinner (which is my fave all time meal), and that my DH is working for our first married and first thanksgiving in our home.
just wanted to offer another perspective!

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
I think it is terrible. When did Thanksgiving become about getting the best deal shopping?
My DH works in retail and this week is the worst week every year. He works 18-20 hours a day. Last year he missing Thanksgiving.
He is actually going into work at 1am tomorrow morning. It is sick. I am waiting for the day he tells me his company has decided to open on Thanksgiving.
ETA: Last year there was a riot in his store and they actually had to shut down for a few hours. So not only does it suck that he has to work so much but it is also dangerous. The big wigs don't care about their employees or their safety. They only care about the bottom line....while they are at home enjoying Thanksgiving with their families.
Sorry for the rant....very touchy subject for me.
ETA: My DH is salaried. He doesn't make any more money by working holidays.

I think its FANTASTIC stores are open on Thanksgiving.
The job economy sucks. Stores being open on Thanksgiving gives more opportunity for people to make some extra dough during this tough economy.
Could mean the difference between putting food at the table (or not) for some people.

My DH is a retail manager and fortunatly his store is closed. However, many people eat at 2-3 oclock on the holiday and when the stores are closing at 7 or 8 ...how is that "being able to eat with the family?"
It kills me every 4th of july and christmas eve that we have to "HOPE" he gets out before 6. If he was a cop, fireman, medical profession or something like that...I could see it, but no one needs anything that badly to need these stores to be open. We create this image and demand for these stores to be open.
I know my DH would forgo the extra money to be with his or my family (most of which we only see a few times a year because everyone is spread apart)
