There are some professions though that do need to be open and I always think about those people as I am also one of them. I never get a holiday off. I've worked every Thanksgiving for as long as I can remember, but I'm in a profession where it is definitely worth it to change lives. Doctors, nurses, hospitals, police officers, our men and service woman, healthcare all work no matter what day it is.
DH & I both have careers that don't stop for the holidays, or ever. 24/7, 365.
.....we haven't spent Christmas together in forever. He is working today. It sucks.
But, we signed up for it. We knew our careers would be like this. I can't complain, KWIM?

I think it is terrible. When did Thanksgiving become about getting the best deal shopping?
My DH works in retail and this week is the worst week every year. He works 18-20 hours a day. Last year he missing Thanksgiving.
He is actually going into work at 1am tomorrow morning. It is sick. I am waiting for the day he tells me his company has decided to open on Thanksgiving.
ETA: Last year there was a riot in his store and they actually had to shut down for a few hours. So not only does it suck that he has to work so much but it is also dangerous. The big wigs don't care about their employees or their safety. They only care about the bottom line....while they are at home enjoying Thanksgiving with their families.
Sorry for the rant....very touchy subject for me.
I am with you on this! My DH is in retail and will work 6 days a week and most likely 12 hr or longer days from now to christmas. I can assure you that his district manager is not doing that. He doesnt get to ENJOY the holiday season
ETA to add: we have a wedding to go to tomorrow. Guess who cant go because Black Friday is mandatory. He asked to work until 1 (not even the whole day off) because it is out of state (CT) and his DM told him that it was part of the job and the answer was no. Well its not worth him getting fired over because we cant live on just my salary....these retail companies OWN their employees.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
I would like to address the comment about how retail workers want the extra money and do not mind.
When I started college I worked for Macys. I had worked there for almost a year, so I wasnt a seasonal employee. They wanted me to work at 12 midnight around the holidays and it was during a time when finals were rolling around. Could I have used the night differential, maybe, but when you make $7 per hour, the extra 50 cents really didnt make or break you and I never got paid time and a half for working a holiday...ever. I told my supervisor that I could not do those hours because of finals. She told me "well, you need to make a choice between this job and school". Um, ok $7 an hour job or school? Yeah, I quit on the spot. As far as the demand for it, well being that this is the first year that so many stores are open Tday that remains to be seen.
The law would state that any store with something like over 50 employees (i.e. walmart) could only be open until 12pm Tday. I dont think thats unfair. There are workers (as Im sure things havent changed that much) who are not working voluntarily...they are scheduled that day, and maybe some may be given the ultimatum that I was given and with the economy, who can afford to quit or lose their job? Fact of the matter is, I think there will be people who think its a good idea so they can fulfill their need to shop and get a good deal. If there is opportunity, then people will take advantage. Thats the sad truth of our world.

I also think that a lot of stores that are open probably think they are gonna make a lot more money than they really do.

Re: Not sure if it's been posted: stores open thanksgiving
People are sheep. Americans are told when they should want to shop, when they should eat a big meal with their families. when to be romantic and buy flowers for a spouse. And they do it. Like clockwork. Cyclically. Every year.
Don't get me wrong--I use Thanksgiving day off to be with my family. My job has off-why wouldn't I?---BUT I shop when I want, I show affection for my husband when I want, and I live based on what I want to do--not what the media tells me to do. And I get better deals than the hyped up ones going on now.

I don't like the idea of retail, but I do think grocery and liquor stores should be open, I think most are closing at 2 today. And celebrating Thanksgiving, and wanting to eat a big meal with my family does not make me a sheep. My DH will also say things like, it's just any day, but to me in everyone's busy busy life, this is a day set aside to gather together and enjoy each other. It may not have anything to do with the actual first Thanksgiving, and the date may be arbitrary, but I know that it is a day I will get to see family, and trust me with the craziness of everyone's schedule, those days are limited.

totally. I agree with you. I'm so used to working that it doesn't bother me. However I was making a point that a retail store does not need to be open. There is no reason. I think having a job that needs to be open is different but with retail these people aren't coming in to help others, they are coming in to make profit. It's sick. Just that comparison alone really makes me mad about it.
Honestly no one I know who worked in retail liked working on holidays. They are there long hours usually and then open again really early Friday morning. My friend worked until 8 one year at old navy on Thanksgiving. Is that really fair?! Poor thing never got to even see her family because some stupid chain retail wants to increase profit. There is definitely something wrong with that.

I don't think they should be open, not even supermarkets, maybe certain supermarkets, but not all. The only thing that should be open are bakeries, restaurants, and movie theatres.
Why does a movie theatre need to be open?

very similar situation , except I worked at a supermarket. they had me working MAX hours and I told them I had finals coming up. my manager did not care that I needed to study bc I was working over 30 hours a week I wound up quitting and throwing my badge at him bc he had scheduled me for 35 hours the week of finals and basically told me I was doing bad in school for other reasons, not because of working so much (he was frustrated bc all the students started complaining and wanting to cut hours). It's not right, these stores really take advantage of their workers.
there are so many people here in NY that don't really get or care about the importance of thankgiving, there is always going to be demand for shopping , it's going to get worse.

Posted by heathergirl It is an artificial demand perpetrated by greedy corporations.
I completely agree!
I agree also...sort of like a Hallmark Holiday. These companies are out there to make money and thats it.

If the sheep thing was in response to me, you should re-read the part where I said that I fully plan to use the day to be with family myself. So we have no disagreement. I was referring to the artificially cultivated need to shop this week and weekend, among other things.

My father was a self-employed retailer. There is no way in he ll he would have EVER kept open on Thanksgiving even if we were in financial trouble. It was bad enough he worked on Saturdays, but Thanksgiving? No way.

I think it's disgusting and doing something very poor for this country.
If you could go back in time and tell our grandparents and their families as children that people would be going to buy yarn on Thanksgiving day instead of spending it with their families -- everyone would
Instead of being at home being thankful for things we have with the people we're thankful for... people are out buying more crap.

Sorry, I thought you meant holidays in general. And I get that, we are told today is a day to be with family, but our schedules are so crazy that this is one of the few days I am seeing my ILs who only live 5 minutes away.

Ha . That's a good point, I don't know why I wrote that. I guess I was just thinking about things are open on Sundays here. I would say it is something you can do with family and friends.
