Notary Public Renewal form. Help!
I am filling out my renewal form. My maiden name is still on my ID card and stamps. I'm in the process of a divorce. Do I still have to change my name on the renewal even though I will be returning back to my maiden name once things are final? Or can I keep the maiden name on there as long as I still sign with the maiden name? Not sure what I can do legally...I thought I remember being told in the class that I can keep it as long as I am still signing my maiden name. I could be way off though...it was 4 years ago!
TIA!!

Re: Notary Public Renewal form. Help!
I don't know the law - but personally I would renew it under my maiden name.

I was told the same thing about the maiden name. I would not change it now, especially if you are divorcing and going back to your maiden name anyway...

Re: Notary Public Renewal form. Help!
Thanks! That's what I'm going to do. I'm in a time cruch b/c I JUST got the form and it expires on Dec. 19th. I know I won't get the new one back before it expires but I'm just trying to do this as quickly as possible! Thanks again!

Re: Notary Public Renewal form. Help!
Renew it under your maiden name if you're changing it back.
There is nothing illegal about it as long as you are not changing it for fraudulent reasons.
and obviously, you cannot use your notary in your maiden name to notarize your own stuff in your married name...

As soon as you get your cancelled check you can use the new expiration date. You have plenty of time to renew, although I'm surprised you're only getting it now. Mine is up in Febraury, and I got the renewal a week ago.

I had to call for them to send it to me. I didn't know that they are supposed to send it three months before the expiration and when I realized it was expiring, I called. I moved twice since I became a notary and I didn't know that the Dep. of State won't forward mail. This is what I was told over the phone anyway..

That's right. Official government mail like that doesn't get forwarded. But, I still think you have plenty of time to just send in the payment. I can't remember ever getting anything back from them after renewing, AND I know on my renewal it says I can use the new date as soon as my check clears.

The renweal form did say I would get a new card within 6-8 weeks. Thanks for telling me about being able to sign once the check clears!
