There is room for limited religious and medical exceptions in the new mandate

That's great but what about the ones who just don't want it? They will lose many excellent nurses and doctors.

An option of testing should be on the table. Testing should also be for vaccinated also since they can also be sick. It should not be vaccinated or nothing. I actually sent this to my nurse friend who does not plan to get vaccinated but haven't heard back to see what her plans will be.

And there are many many more healthcare workers and patients who do not want to be in close proximity to those who are not vaccinated. What about them? Don't they have a right to a safe work environment? Don't patients have a right to healthcare providers who are much less likely to spread the virus to them? There are many more sides to this than just "many will quit" (or the similar, "many will not frequent a business that requires a vaccine") that you continue to insist is the only valid point of view. NY is not the only State to institute this mandate and I doubt it will be the last. More and more of the US population is getting vaccinated daily. Yes, the pace slowed considerably, but is rising quickly in states that are seeing rising rates of COVID. Eventually, those who refuse for no valid reason, will be left behind - unable to attend many events, restaurants and schools and yes, even their jobs.

But these same people are ok with being in close proximity to a healthcare worker who did not get the flu vaccine during a bad flu season?

Don’t worry many hospitals are also mandating flu shots- I had a choice last year to get a flu shot by 11/1 or find a new job- from what I have heard this year will be the same.

If you’re willing to share, how do you/your colleagues feel about this mandate for the covid vaccine?

I think it’s a reasonable request.

Anecdotal: I know an RN who thought Covid was fake. All but laughed in face of masks, distancing, laying low. Still was reporting to work obviously. Started the whole patting themselves on the back thing for being on the front lines... but.. didn’t want to walk the talk. Jokes about being out and about. Refuses vaccine... and.. came down with Covid.

A medical “professional” like that is a risk to patients, especially young ones. You can’t be in the medical field and not put your patients first. They take an oath.

If you can’t do it, step aside and let someone else step up who has patients interest in mind.

That would be reasonable if vaccinated people didn't get and transmit COVID. That is not the case at all. IMO vaccinated and unvaccinated people need to be taking the same exact precautions when it comes to community spread.

Same logic goes for the flu shot. People with the flu shot can and still come down with the flu. Its happened to my family more than once which is why I no longer take it. It's also probably why the flu shot has never been mandated.

All vaccinated people I know are back to wearing masks indoors. I’m not sure what you’re trying to get at here.

Many but not all. Vaccinated people are still getting and transmitting COVID therefore they should follow the same rules set for the unvaccinated. Many unvaccinated people have a false sense of security that they can't catch or spread COVID and this is simply untrue. My friend who is fully vaccinated and has been for months just contracted COVID from her vaccinated MIL who got it from her vaccinated home attendant.

On my team of 45 people all but one person willing chose to get vaccinated with in a month of being offered the first shot. The unvaccinated person caught Covid around the time the delta variant was first being discussed. She sobbed that she chose not to get vaccinated after being talked to by multiple people about the risks. We had an overall vaccination rate of nearly 80% of all staff before the mandate. The majority of my colleagues were eager to get vaccinated ASAP. I was initially a bit hesitant (back in December) but after a lot of reading and weighing the odds knowing I was being exposed daily I opted to get vaccinated the first week of January. I think getting the vaccine is another layer of protection against serious illness from Covid. Honestly, most of my colleagues are more worried about long term Covid effects than the initial illness. As physicians and scientists most of my coworkers have the “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure mentality”. We are used to being required to have our vaccine titers up to date and getting flu shots and boosters for other vaccine if levels are determined to be low are part of the necessary employee health clearance. Medical and religious exceptions are given and a wavier must be signed. I am allergic to a particular “mandatory vaccine” and have a waiver.

I don’t know the exact number because it is protected by HIPPA but one person in my lab of 12 people and his entire family had it back in March if 2020. I know some of the doctors also tested positive early on- I work in a federal facility and we never had very serious issues with PPE that our private “sister hospitals” had and I think that helped- we also have very strict mask mandates that look like they are only going to get even stricter.
Right now the private hospital where I have my academic appointment has stricter regulations in place for the past two weeks.

It is about having multiple layers of protection-In general no vaccine provides 100% of protection- add vaccination and good hand hygiene along with indoor mask mandates and your hospital staff should be in decent shape- same goes for anyone really.

Re: NY mandates healthcare workers get the vaccine

This is sad. Some healthcare workers WILL quit and unfortunately there WILL be staff shortages. And when they either quit or are fired, and the covid numbers still are high, who will be left to blame?

What is amazing to me is that neither the CDC, Pfizer nor the White House is mandating the vaccine for employees and staff. That is very telling in my opinion.

Are you actually insinuating that flu and COVID are of equal health threat? OH. MY. GOD. Chat Icon

LittleDiva........ that you? She's been MIA since you've been around and your posts sure do sound A LOT like hers. Weird.

Yes. To people in a healthcare facities. The flu can kill them. Covid can kill them. The flu shot has been around for years and not mandated. Covid vaccine is new and mandated???

Oh my. Chat Icon

Keep rolling your eyes. When you sit and think about it, inlets say a hospital. Covid and flu are just as much a threat to a person with a weak immune system. Are we going to argue about that! They are both a threat.

COVID is a greater threat to those who are immunocompromised. Weird how in 2021 people still need to be told this.

I'm not going down this rabbit hole, LittleDiva. I also have zero issue with mandating the vaccine for Healthcare workers. If some doctor will be breathing two inches from my face and cutting me open for surgery then hell yea, I want them vaccinated.

So glad it’s that simple in your mind. CDC has already reported vaccinated carry the same viral load and can transmit just as easy but guess what, the quarantine rules don’t apply to them. Here’s a story that is not hypothetical, surgeon comes back from vacation to high risk area (he’s vaccinated so not living cautiously), wife and son have covid (wife vaccinated, son not), surgeon goes to work every day oh until he comes down with covid. An unvaccinated would be a close contact and have to quarantine, vaccinated don’t. He exposed his patients.

Well If your “colleagues” are more worried about long term covid effects then initial illness then they should read the research on the studies that are being done, obviously they are just being started because the first vaccines weren’t given that long ago and no one really knew for sure what would be the impact but studies are coming out now that show even fully vaccinated (I believe it was Pfizer in the study) who had a mild or asymptomatic case of covid are getting long term covid issues - doesn’t seem the vaccine prevents long haul covid issues.

Healthcare workers were never required to quarantine after exposure even before vaccines. If that was the case, there would be no healthcare workers. My sister is a nurse and has been exposed to Covid pretty much daily since March 2020.

Viral load does appear to be the same in both vaccinated and unvaccinated but the length of time a vaccinated person is contagious is less due to their body clearing the infection sooner. This is based on data out of Singapore.

And we will be told hospitals are overwhelmed due to Covid and it’s just bc of shortages. Call me a crazy conspiracy theorist but my gut is telling me that’s what will happen.

I’ve seen friends on social media saying they aren’t giving in and will leave the field.

I heard from my nurse friend who is not vaccinated and she said it is disgusting and everyone should put in for a religious exemption.

These are not entry level jobs people might have to leave. They are ones they have worked for many years and love. This will not be an easy decision for some and it is sad.

As physicians and scientists (some doing Covid research since March of 2020) we are all very well aware of the current peer reviewed work- FYI in some cases the mRNA vaccines seem to improve long haul Covid symptoms- as I said earlier the vaccine should be used in conjunction with other layers of prevention-like masks and good hand hygiene.

Most healthcare workers I know were eager to get vaccinated- religious and medical exemptions are not just being handed out- when you go into healthcare it is well accepted that you are going to be asked to have certain vaccinations. It is a tough situation for all- risk management has to consider the liability of having unvaccinated staff in direct patient care rolls and people have to consider if they are will to follow the new mandates.

Two of my drs mentioned the same thing regarding vaccines improving long haul symptoms. At the time I was still dealing with fatigue and loss of taste post-COVID so I was eager for the vaccine in the hopes it would help.

Yes, and so you know what I posted was accurate then, and as for your additional commentary, actually, in some cases ithe vaccine can make the long haul symptoms worse or actually re-ignite or exacerbate symptoms. But, since you seem to know it all and are the expert as a physician and scientist ... I’m sure I don’t need to tell you!

NY mandates healthcare workers get the vaccine

Why are so many non-healthcare workers concerned about the vaccine being mandated for healthcare workers?

Re: NY mandates healthcare workers get the vaccine

What are all these mandates even accomplishing? Look at Israel! They have been way ahead of us with vaccinations like 80 percent of their population and covid is raging there both in vaccinated and unvaccinated! High proportion of vaccination with Pfizer didn’t stop this! Now they are scrambling to get third doses into people to try to help. This current vaccine isn’t the answer. Mandating is doing nothing, cases are higher than they were when less people were vaccinated two months ago. We need a better plan as a country.

Why not? Many of us know healthcare workers. We shouldn't be concerned because we might not be one?

That is like telling all these people who put masks on. on this board, because they see others who might be worried about the virus, why are you concerned about them?
