NYC teachers: Childcare leave questions
I am due September 1st and plan to take a childcare leave. I would like to get paid for whatever I can so I would like to take the 6 weeks maternity leave and get paid for my sick days. However, if I tell my principal that I won't be coming back for the year (or more) will I lose the 6 weeks or am I entitled to them before a childcare leave regardless? I will eventually call the uft but I wanted to see if you girls knew how any of this works.

you should get the 6 weeks paid no matter what. you are entitled to a total of 12 weeks with your insurance benefits and your job to be kept secure through fmla. hth!

I just went to the UFT last week. You get your paid leave (using your sick days) no matter what. The FMLA covers you for benefits for up to 12 weeks. After that, you lose your benefits, but not your job!
