nyc teachers + health insurance. help!
if you are staying home a year, what are you doing about health insurance? are you going under your husbands? will you just stay under your husbands and drop yours when you go back to work?
i am so confused as to what to do here. seems logical to just go under my husbands with the baby since i plan to be home a year, but someone else told me to keep mine AND be covered under my husbands, that you can never have enough insurance. i feel so confused here. i even went to the UFT maternity workshop which really didnt help at all.

How can you keep yours if you';re not working?
I'm planning on taking off the year too. My husband doesnt get benefits. So I'm going to put the baby on Child Health Plus (probably the BC/BS or United Health plan). I checked with the peds we are interested in and they take it.
For myself and my husband, I might try to get something part time (Home Depot has good benes) so we are covered, or look into Cobra.
I dont think we can keep our insurance if we're not working.
We get it for 12 weeks with FMLA, so our baby will first go under that and then CHP. That's my plan. Im going to the maternity workshop in June.

Re: nyc teachers + health insurance. help!
I plan on going under my DH's. When I return to work (which may be in one year or 2 unsure) I will go back on mine bc my copays are lower.
When we got married DH was covered by both--his and mine and his overrode mine so it was better for us to drop his and just use mine.

i guess what i meant is keeping my insurance for the 12 week FMLA. i dont even know if i should DO the FMLA or just go right on to my husbands when the baby comes. what is so frustrating about the NYC system is that when u ask 3 people, u get 3 different answers. even my union rep seems confused.

I know what you mean...NYC teacher here also.
Well, my plan is to add the baby to my insurance through NYCDOE (but again, hubby doesnt have it, so thats my only option). Then after the 12 weeks, putting the baby on CHP. Good luck!! I know it's such an annoying process to deal with. Im still confused on it all!
I would keep it for the time being...might as well..

One we were marrie I went unde DHs because 1. I prefer the insurance he getsthrough his LI school district 2. I knew I wouldnt want to worry about if I had a baby and took extra time off. 3. They give you moneu back for not taking ins through them.
I dont see the point of have 2 insurances. If you plan on staying home, I would go under DH (you can always go bacl on at work at the next enrollment).

You are NOT kidding. I am a guidance counselor and I can't seem to get any straight answer of my right of return...they vaguely tell me that I CAN return to my school UNLESS my position is excessed but then say, wait maybe it is different for guidance sorry to hijack but what you said is SO true
