Re: NYPD officer attacks a cyclist - caught on video
Posted by MrsMerlot
Okay, I only looked at the video and did not read the article - YET.
I have to say (and perhaps I'm in the minority here) -- but I completely saw something different than what is claimed in the posts.
I saw this:
The officer headings towards the sidewalk, trying to move out of the way (slower moving than anticipated) and the cyclist avoiding, and they crashed.
Did not look like an assault to me...
Well even if that WAS the case
the Officer did lie on the report--he stated that the bicylist drove his bike TOWARDS him and that they BOTH fell to the ground due to the bicyclist assaulting the police officer....and how the cop received cuts & brusies.
His report does not add up to what the video shows.
The officer clearly body checked the guy on the bike---VERY HARD. It almost looks like the cop is seeing him coming and walking to get in the way of the cyclist......and then body checks him. The cop could have jumped backwards instead of checking him like that.
I mean I know I'm very pro-cop--but the video shows something very contrary to the report

What a POS. Sounds to me like he's a typical "cops son" spoiled brat who then became a cop and thinks he can do whatever the hell he feels like.
This floored me:
"Pogan's father, a retired NYPD detective who worked on the Joint Terrorism Task Force, defended his son's actions last night. "You gotta do what you gotta do to make an arrest," said Patrick Pogan Sr., 51, who retired in 2002. "
You gotta do what you gotta do to make an arrest?! What the feck does that mean? I guess in this case, assult an innocent man and then make up charges against him.
Obviously the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
What a prick.

Yep!! These are the kind of cops I can not STAND because they give all the others a bad name- and they are the reason why cops are constantly being scrutinized. A- holes like this. That think they are ENTITLED to do whatever they want. Cocky b@stards on a power trip! Please. And that statement- you gotta do what you gotta do? Please. This is not 1946 where they used to beat the p!ss out of people for no reason and get away with it. I think that old man should keep his mouth shut- and get over his own "glory days" as a cop- he is only making it worse! My husband is a cop and he HATES people like this... in his mind they act like this to make up for some insecurity elsewhere in their life... and in the process give all the good ones a bad rap. This guy and his father both probably have small peters if you ask me!

Maybe if the starting salary to risk your life in NYC for a living wasn't $25k they'd get less A$$holes in the application process -
But let me ask .....was this group of riders doing something wrong? b/c from what I saw on that video, the guy on the bike slowed down and went WELL out of his way to avoid the cop who walked toward him and knocked him off the bike ........ - I don't have sound on my PC b/c I'm @ work - Did he tell him to stop or something? I feel like there had to be SOME reason that cop just knocked the guy on his a$$ in the middle of Times Square in front of all of those people - Unless he really is just a complete moron -

The scary thing is that they have to take a pyschological test! How on earth did this loser pass it??
I'm guessing he got in more b/c he's third generation rather than on his merrit.
It's a shame really, b/c he's taking a spot on the force away from someone who wants to be there and could be a GOOD cop and not an azz.

Ugh its statements like THAT--that give GOOD cops a bad name and make my husband's job that much harder.
The video they've been showing on the news isn't very good.....the youtube video on here-- I just watched it. TOTALLY can see the cop is WATCHING the guy coming up the street and you can SEE he is trying to steer to the left to avoid the come who is CLEARLY walking TOWARDS this guy to throw him off the bike.
This douchebag just set cops back--yet again.

The critical mass rides are done as almost a form of civil disobedience---they are about trying to get the city to be more senstive to those on bikes and create better safety and bike lanes for them.
More than anything they are a big headache for cops as they are policing the streets and causing traffic jams. But I think this cop was just looking for someone to bust and knew it would be his word against the guy on the bike.
He was charging with assault, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. If there was no video---I'm sure he'd have no chance!

Omg that guys has issues, that looked like a bully and the fact that he has a badge and is following Daddy's footsteps is a recipe for disaster. I can see what kind of kid he was growing up.
Poor cyclist must have been humiliated. see now if that was me or my DH, we would've wanted to punch the Sh!t out of the cop and than it would have been worse.

Re: NYPD officer attacks a cyclist - caught on video
I am so heartbroken by this whole thing. It is confirmed that he is a former student of mine. He was a sweetheart when I had him as a student and actually remember him fondly. He was a sweetheart. I also remember his fear when his father was missing after 9/11 for a day.
I AM NOT defending him, I am just saying as someone who knew him when he was 12 my heart is breaking to see someone who had such pride in the NYPD go and do something so wrong and so early in his career.
It's just sad that even if there is even some remote chance that there were circumstances off camera that we couldn't see that led to this incident/ assault (Pat on the guy), Patrick will always have to carry this 'mark' around him forever. If he is found guilty then he should suffer the consequences of his actions. It's just a shame for the little boy I still can see sitting in my classroom.

I saw the cyclist steer to the left of the cops and then the cop in question walk and then practically jog to the cyclist and push him off the bike.
i was just going to say this... he even put his shoulder down and "checked" him off of his bike, like in a hockey game. it was clear as day (IMO).
Seriously.. it looks like he had it out for the guy. The cyclist looks like he was trying to avoid the cop, IMO

You are 100% right. And the reason is- there is a HUGE recruitment problem- that the mayor and the city try to sweep under the rug. It is very hard to hire and retain cops at the ridiculously low salary and the deplorable working conditions they are given. The rules have gotten more and more laxed over the years- because they can't hire cops. You can now get on with a criminal history- that used to be unheard of. It's very sad and scary for the city. It is only going to get worse in the next 10-20 years as more cops retire and they can't hire new ones. The refusal of the city to pay a decent salary seems penny wise and pound foolish...
