This cop is an idiot. Did he really think out of all those people, no one was filming what was going on - and besidees that, there were hundreds of witnesses who saw what he did. What he did is disgusting, he should be fired and arrested for assault.
I agree plus they also arrested him the guy on the bike!! *** I hope he sues that cop!! I was so ****** seeing that video!

I am so heartbroken by this whole thing. It is confirmed that he is a former student of mine. He was a sweetheart when I had him as a student and actually remember him fondly. He was a sweetheart. I also remember his fear when his father was missing after 9/11 for a day.
I AM NOT defending him, I am just saying as someone who knew him when he was 12 my heart is breaking to see someone who had such pride in the NYPD go and do something so wrong and so early in his career.
It's just sad that even if there is even some remote chance that there were circumstances off camera that we couldn't see that led to this incident/ assault (Pat on the guy), Patrick will always have to carry this 'mark' around him forever. If he is found guilty then he should suffer the consequences of his actions. It's just a shame for the little boy I still can see sitting in my classroom.
I'm not trying to be mean here, but you're remembering a KID. A 12 year old KID. People change in ten years. Obviously, this guy did.
Kind of reminds me of when they show a picture of an accused criminal, but it's from when they were a kid, looking very angelic; that's usually when they cue the interview with a neighbor who says "I just don't understand it, he was such a nice boy..."
This kid you remember is a MAN now and a lousy one at that.

Exactly why I am sad. Someone that was so full of promise went so wrong. I did not defend him. I just said how sad it is, from what he had hopes for as a kid to what he is now. I even said he should be punished for what he did.

I think she made it clear that she wasnt defending him?? Its in ALL CAPS! I think she is just trying to say what she remember about him and how sometimes people change or things happen. No where in that post did I think she was saying that she didnt understand due to the fact that he was a nice boy.

Come on now... I'm SURE you could have squeezed in at least one more eyeroll.
I'm sorry if you took offense to what I said; but I interpreted it as you were defending him. As a result, I responded.
I even prefaced it with I'm not being mean...
Geez, lets get on our big girl panties and deal.

I felt she contradicted herself in her post and I replied.
As far as I was concerned I felt she was in a way defending him.
It's just MY opinion.
Deal.
Oh and thanks for pointing out the "all caps" in caps.

And your very welcome...I thought it would come through much clearer like that.

its so nuts that there used to be a WAIT LIST to get on the NYPD of qualified canidates who didn't have records and such.
now---its turned to crap trying to recruit good guys.
You are so right. And if you want to see an example- look at the wait list to get on Nassau or Suffolk. Look at the hundreds of thousands of people who take the Suffolk and Nassau test. It is almost impossible to get on...even with a perfect score. Why is that? Hmmm- maybe because they are paid what they DESERVE to risk their life every single day? The city really needs to stop being so friggin' IGNORNANT in this matter!

So if I preface something by saying I am not trying to be rude, but then I am highly insulting then that makes it ok. Like I don't mean to be mean but you are a moron! Does that make it ok??? I don't think so.
I never said he was innocent, the video is clear. The only thing I said is if there is a chance that something happened off camera BEFORE the incident that made the assault happen that he would have this mark on him forever.
As for the other comment as a teacher we are like a parent, I still see them as the kids they were sitting in the room, even the 6'7 teacher across the hall who was in my class when he was 12 too. He will always be little Jimmy to me not Mr. S.
Oh and since you asked

Seriously get over yourself. Just because you can not read things properly doesn't mean you have the right to be insulting. So I will put on my big girl panties when you put on your thinking cap and reading glasses. If insults and that statement are all you can come up with then it looks like I am truly not off for the summer I am still dealing with a 12 year old.

Okay, I only looked at the video and did not read the article - YET.
I have to say (and perhaps I'm in the minority here) -- but I completely saw something different than what is claimed in the posts.
I saw this:
The officer headings towards the sidewalk, trying to move out of the way (slower moving than anticipated) and the cyclist avoiding, and they crashed.
Did not look like an assault to me...
watch that again...with your glasses on this time...
I actually watched it a couple of time thinking (or hoping) it really was an accident and it can look like the cop was walking to the sidewalk and they accidently collided, but the more you watch it it looks like the cop saw the cyclist coming, starting walking fast to collide with him and totally body checked him.

Maybe if the starting salary to risk your life in NYC for a living wasn't $25k they'd get more less A$$holes in the application process -
The scary thing is that they have to take a pyschological test! How on earth did this loser pass it??
I'm guessing he got in more b/c he's third generation rather than on his merrit.
It's a shame really, b/c he's taking a spot on the force away from someone who wants to be there and could be a GOOD cop and not an azz.
I know former drug dealers, women beaters, etc that are NYC cops now. I don't think their requirements are all that stringent. Granted there are good ones out ther but plenty of bad ones too.
You are 100% right. And the reason is- there is a HUGE recruitment problem- that the mayor and the city try to sweep under the rug. It is very hard to hire and retain cops at the ridiculously low salary and the deplorable working conditions they are given. The rules have gotten more and more laxed over the years- because they can't hire cops. You can now get on with a criminal history- that used to be unheard of. It's very sad and scary for the city. It is only going to get worse in the next 10-20 years as more cops retire and they can't hire new ones. The refusal of the city to pay a decent salary seems penny wise and pound foolish...
So true. DH has been a cop for almost 9 yrs and said some of the people they hire are just as bad as the criminals he arrests. Some of them can barely read and write basic english.
This is why a lot of GOOD NYPD cops are leaving the dept. in swarms to go to Suffolk, Nassau, NYS Troopers even other cities as far as Washington and Arizona. They are leaving not just for the pay, but to work in a dept. that respects them, to work in an area where the citizens appreciate and respect them.

Re: NYPD officer attacks a cyclist - caught on video
very unprofessional.
it just goes to show you - there are bad apples in every bunch.
and with the salaries they are making - which should be MUCH more - they are going to, at times, get some people that just don't act the right way.
i feel like they deserve so much better and that if they don't get it - they will, from time to time, get a real jerk looking to take the job. luckily, for every one jerk there are a ton of good cops who do the right thing.
he will prob lose his job. i think it is the right thing - you can't do something like that, bottom line.

that it the worst part to me- the poor cyclist probably had to spend the night in the "tombs" which from what my unlce (retired NYPD) told me- is pretty horrible
