Ocular Migraines
Does anyone get these?
I've gotten ( what I think) was an ocular migraine 2x in the past 2 days. I recall having one about a year ago and having no clue what it was. It is a round blurry spot in front of both eyes. Distorted vision, no pain and lasts about 30 minutes. I'm making a dr appt but from what I've read there's no treatment. I would like to know the causes and triggers for it.
Thanks...

Re: Ocular Migraines
its called an aura without a headache.
some docs dont liek the word occular but i digress lol
its truly best to see a neuro to rule out any brain issues.
if it is a migraine in fact...i would go to the ny headache center webpage....its in ny and the doc is dr mauskop..
he and his staff are amazing at figuring out whats wrong! xoxo

Re: Ocular Migraines
I get them sporadically. I have the aura followed by the headache. What helps me is Advil, laying still in a dark room and cold compresses. Caffeine helps too.

Re: Ocular Migraines
Yep I get these. I used to have them followed by a terrible headache. Now I just get the ocular symptoms (usually lasts about 45 minute) and no headache. They are very annoying!

Re: Ocular Migraines
Definitely see a neuro, preferably a headache specialist (I went all around the mulberry bush until I saw a headache specialist).
It sounds like you don't have them so often that you'd want to take a lot of meds, but I have cut back on my migraines significantly by taking
Vitamin B Co Q10 Magnesium Butterbur extract
There really aren't side effects, and it can help decrease your migraine symptoms.

Just wanted to add to this list- MELATONIN! I did some research and they have found that migraine sufferers have lower levels of melatonin than normal. I started taking one 3 mg melatonin before bed each night and I have to say it cut down my migraines a lot. Also the magnesium is great too.

Re: Ocular Migraines
I get the aura then the headache. When I get it I have a hard time seeing it is horrible. I get them from hormonal issues. I don't get them often though maybe 4-5 a year.
I learned the minute I start to get the aura part I immediately take an excedrin migrane and if I catch it early I don't get any headache or only a mild liveable one. If I don't take something right away though they can get bad. Have you tried excedrin Migrane? Try taking it with some caffeine which helps it work (per my doctor). There are migrane meds you can take but I don't get them often enough or severe enough to bother.

Re: Ocular Migraines
I get these too. Every once in a while... not frequently. No pain or the visual migraine followed by mild, dull headache. They happen more frequently after the births of both my children. Hormones are a trigger. Sudden bright light is a trigger for me. Google ocular migraines or visual migraines. You can find more triggers. Mine last 20 - 40 minutes or so. Lying down with my eyes closed helps.

Re: Ocular Migraines
Thanks everyone. Helps to know not the only one . Interesting that hormones can be a trigger ! I should keep excedrin in my desk.
