Oh boy, talk about a change in plans!
So, we ripped out the nasty carpet in our kitchen last week, then we realized there was linoleum underneath that was glued down. We really needed to take up the linoleum to lay the tile floor, so as they're ripping out the linoleum just now, they found awesome hardwood floors, the only problem is the linoleum is glued to the floor in some spots. We have a guy coming in ten minutes to see if he can fix the floors and sand and polish them for us. So keep your fingers crossed for us because I really wanted hardwood in there to begin with

Fingers crossed for you!
I can't imagine a time when people actually thought it was a good idea to put linoleum over hardwoods! Or paneling over perfectly good walls, for that matter!!

Ooh - fingers crossed! Good luck!
We found original hardwood floors under the nasty carpet in our living room, hall & bedrooms that was so badly damaged we thought we'd never be able to refinish them. In the end they came out BEAUTIFUL...even the floor guy was impressed with his work & said he wished he had before & after pics! So there's hope!!

Oooo yay! The guy is here right now and he thinks we can get them back to looking gorgeous. I cannot even believe that anyone would tar paper over such gorgeous oak floors!

Re: Oh boy, talk about a change in plans!
that is awesome!!!!
They should be able to sand down the glue with very little issue. If not, ask them to quote you a price to replace the boards that are most affected. They may be able to just swap out the damaged boards and then sand/stain everything.
Good Luck -- what a fabulous find!!!!

QUestion about wood floors in kitchen... Ther is no problem with spilling things on the floors? b/c of the poly on top, it protects the wood and won't stain, correct?

And who carpets their kitchen? I don't care what era, that is nasty.
That's awesome about the floors since hardwood is so expensive to install.

My parents have never had a problem before, my neighbor across the street said it's been great. So, I guess we shall see!

Re: Oh boy, talk about a change in plans!
Thats a great find.I'm glad they can fix it.
I can see "maybe" covering up hardwood, b/c linoleum or vinyl is slightly easier to clean, but then why put carpet on top of that?!
Sealed floors should be fine. I lived an apartment with unfinished hardwood & waxed at one point, but never kept up with--the whole apartment was like that & all I could do was sweep. I spilled cranberry juice & is soaked right into the wood.
