Re: OK - who wants to help me study for my exam? (Not teacher related!!) - today's topic - SCIENCE!
Yep - you are both right - its B - heres what they say -
A frictional force acts between 2 surfaces that slide past one another. The 2 variables that affect frictional force are the smoothness of the surfaces and how hard the surfaces are pressed together.
Adding sheets of lead to the block increases the mass of the block, and therefore, its weight.
The added weight will increase how hard the surfaces are pressed together, creating greater frictional force.
the additional frictional force will tend to slow the blocks movement down the ramp, so it will travel a shorter distance on the level surface....
I KIND of think I'm getting this, but if you want to help me understand this better by giving other examples - I'd appreciate it!!!

Ok, if you sit on a sled, and your baby sits on a sled and go down a hill.
The sled is exaclty the same size, so the are touching the ground is the same, but you weigh more than him.
You will go a shorter distance becuase your extra weight is making the sled push harder against the ground, creating more friction.
For the other part, increased roughness, it would be like if you put the baby on a sled and puched him down a hill, then covered the bottom of the sled in sand paper, the sand paper sled would not go as far becuase of the increased friction from roughness

It has to do with Newton's three laws of motion.

What are the roles of modeling and optimization in the engineering design process?also:
understanding the basics of technological systems
Applying criteria for selecting tools, materials, resources to design and construct technologocal product or service

DH is a smarty-pants mechanical engineer... he said that the purpose of modeling is to visualize whats being designed so that you know how its going to behave when you actually build it for real. this way you can solve any problems before spending the money building it for real. optimization is used to minimize or maximize one aspect of the thing being designed. for example, if you want it to weigh less, you might optimize it and use a different material thats lighter, etc.

Wow - thanks!
It was hard finding info like that on the internet - I think they assume you already know this stuff on websites and gear it for people like your DH!!!

no problem! the way Dh told me to remember optimization, is to remember "optimum".... like perfect. the optimum temperature is the perfect temperature. so when you're optimizing something, you're making it perfect.. changing things to make it exactly the way it needs to be for whatever its function is ( it might need to be lighter weight, go faster or slower, put a part in a better location, etc)

Re: OK - who wants to help me study for my exam? Next topic on bottom - MUSIC!!!!!
Music:
I need to get the basics on the following:
comparing various types of instruments in terms of the sounds they produce - anything I need to know specifically in this area? (strings, percussion, etc) - aside from the obvious?
Defining musical terms - pitch, tempo...
This one I could use help with - using basic scientific concepts to explain how music-related sound is prooduced, transmitted through air, and received by listeners
Recognizing basic technical skills that musicians must develop to produce an aesthetically acceptable performance (manual dexterity, breathing techniques, knowledge of musical notation)
If you can share what you feel would be important to know - generally - that would be great! I nkow there are some musicians and music teachers here!

That has to do with sound waves & the anatomy of the ear.
That's al I remember !
But this is coming from someone who never knew the answer in college music because she was asleep during the question & wolud just blurt out "dissonence".
Just curious, what kind of test is this that is so broad?

When I took it, there were 2 questions on folk music
They also asked about different instruments!

For string instruments, the loniger the strings (hence larger the instrument), the deeper and lower the sounds. So a violin has a high pitch sound, a viola more mellow, a cello more mellow, and finally a bass lower than that.
Tempo is the speed.

I need to get the basics on the following:
comparing various types of instruments in terms of the sounds they produce - anything I need to know specifically in this area? (strings, percussion, etc) - aside from the obvious?
--strings, percussion, winds, brass, the voice, electronic
Defining musical terms - pitch, tempo...
--dynamics, key signature, time signature, major, minor, diminished, augmented, treble clef, bass clef, alto clef, motives (motif)
This one I could use help with - using basic scientific concepts to explain how music-related sound is prooduced, transmitted through air, and received by listeners
--as a singer, i can talk about the voice as a musical instrument-- the vocal chords vibrate and the sound resonates through out the cavities of the face and then the soundwaves reach the listner's ears and the information is processed by the brain
--it's pretty much the same for instruments-- the soundwaves travel through the air and reach the listeners
Recognizing basic technical skills that musicians must develop to produce an aesthetically acceptable performance (manual dexterity, breathing techniques, knowledge of musical notation)
--musicanship, projection, enunciation, articulation, tone quality, vibratto or controlled vibratto
If you can share what you feel would be important to know - generally - that would be great! I nkow there are some musicians and music teachers here!
i hope that helps a bit. let me know if you want more than that!
