OK EBF Moms of Infants....How do you go out?...

DS is 6 weeks and obviously has no head control yet. I want to go out to lunch with friends, go to the mall and begin taking him out of the house. But...I need to direct his head to my nipple to ensure a good latch. This means that I need to see what is going on and can't throw the nursing cover on me and hope for the best. I am like an idiot hiding under the blanket with him until he's latched on...then I re-emerge and jump back into the conversation. How in the world do you manage feedings in public? I don't pump and have not introduced a bottle. It's all me...and I need to figure this out quickly. I'm stir crazy.

did you try a nursing cover like the hooter hider/bebe au lait, they have a wire built into the top, so that it creates a "u" shape at the top of the cover when you have it on so you can see right down it to the baby. It also straps around your neck so you have use of both hands.

Re: OK EBF Moms of Infants....How do you go out?...

I would usually pump and take milk in a bottle if I was going out in public, just b/c it's so much easier. But if you don't have that option I would get what Melissa suggested... the nursing cover with the wire at the top so you can see down to the baby. I used this on the plane a few weeks ago and it was SO much better than just a blanket.

I like them..they have some really cute patterns. Thank you both for suggesting these. I'm going to order one today.

I would recommend practicing at home (some say to do it in front of a mirror so you can see what others are seeing Chat Icon ).
With DS1, I was not comfortable nursing in public because I felt like everyone would know what I was doing! I would go into changing rooms or my car or feed him an expressed bottle. With DS2, I had to "learn" to do it in public and after the 1st or 2nd time, I felt so liberated!!! Once we got the hang of it, he would just about start salivating when he saw the cover Chat Icon I ended up BF for about 15 months and nursed him EVERYWHERE!

Re: OK EBF Moms of Infants....How do you go out?...

I always had a lot of difficulty withe nursing cover, and I used nipple shields til Sasha was like 12 weeks, so that made nursing in public impossible with all the "set-up".

What I did was bring a bottle of expressed milk, then pumped when I got home.

THe other thing you can do is plan to go to places that have what I call "safe areas"-- so a place that you can nurse comfortably. Try a mall with nice bathrooms that have mother's lounges-- or even dept stores where you can go into a dressing room (thanks for that tip Felice!).

I never left him for more than 2 hours or went out with him in public for more than 2 hours. If I went out It would be immediately after a feeding. I just didn't feel particularly brave feeding in public. lol

That's what I was going to suggest. That way you don't have to hide!

Re: OK EBF Moms of Infants....How do you go out?...

Nursing cover is awesome.....

when they get older its even easier. I would always wear a bra, tank top and shirt so I could just pull up the shirt and down teh tank top and she could nurse and I could pull the shirt right down to her mouth and you couldn't tell she was nursing.. just looked liek I was carrying her Chat Icon

It gets easier the more you do it. I remember being sooo nervous the first few times...... after a few months I could just pick her up and nurse her.. even if we were walking around the mall and no one new what I was doing! It was kinda like our little secret Chat Icon

I never practiced at home, but I think it would be a good idea to do this. Wear a nursing tank top under another shirt. That way, you'll have minimal exposure. A nursing cover is also good especially one that's easy to see DC from the top. If you're not comfortable nursing in public, places like Nordstroms have mother's lounges which are great.

ITA!

I try to pump if I can, otherwise I use a hooter hider. It takes some maneuvering at first to get the hang of it, but it's pretty easy after a few tries!

I've done that in a restaurant and the waitress didn't even know I had the baby with me because he was under the cover... and then when she brought our food, he was out and she was so confused! Chat Icon

I like to wear a nursing tank and a cardigan.... I also was just in the Motherhood outlets and they have some good nursing tops.
