how much is a half a cow? I was always interested in getting a small lamb and break it down but if a half of cow and split it with my parents and its cost affective i will do this.

I wanted to raise chickens but we have ordnance against that. Plus dh doesn't think i could kill it.

1 PACKAGE of chicken cutlets or 1 ACTUAL chicken cutlet?-lol!!
I can't imagine splitting a cutlet with anyone-lol.

my husbad would starve to death!

The other night I bought 4 skirt steaks. I bought so much figuring he would have it for lunch the next day. I ate 1/4 of one, he ate the rest, there was nothing left over.

I know!!!!
When we make chicken cutlets breaded, there is NOTHING left as my kids devour them-lol!!
My dh is an eater too and he would look at me like I had 2 heads if I told him we would be splitting the one chicken cutlet-lol!!

I am remember many years ago and they had some type of 2/$3 deal at Burger King and I said we could get that. He said, well what are you going to eat?---Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We always spend more than 100/week on groceries.

We usually do a few different trips - Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Farmers Market, Fairway.

I am willing to spend a bit more on food though -I am very into nutrition and healthy eating, so its important to me. We adjust our budgets elsewhere.

I spend about $100 for 2 people, and that's with lots of meals out, so I definitely have nothing helpful to add on that front.

However, I would like to direct people to this thread that I posted recently, which I think might be relevant to some.

I think she means she buys thick cutlets and slices them thin. They then each have their own thin cutlet. This is what we do.

Re: OK People....How do you spend less than $100 a week on groceries

For those who can do it for under $100 a week, are you eating fish or a protein every night for dinner? I find that I eat fish 2-3 times a week and there's just no way to do it for less than that.

My cheapest meal is turkey meatballs, sauce and pasta. To me that's a cheap go to when I have nothing left or don't really want to cook. I may throw in a bag of steamfresh broccoli.

Tonight was burgers. Whole wheat rolls, 90% lean grass fed sirloin, tomatoes, onions, peppers, pickles and potatoes. That meal cost $20 without condiments and bevs.

Re: OK People....How do you spend less than $100 a week on groceries

As I already stated, I spend far less than $100 per week.

To respond to those who think that mean all I eat is junk and processed foods or foods filled with hormones:

1. I buy organic foods. I do not have to buy a lot of meat though as I am a vegetarian

2. I do not eat processed foods or mostly do not eat them. I do like pretzels

3. we are only a family of 2

It is possible and you shouldn't be so quick to judge or think that people are "filling" thier kids with hormones. You should also be senstive to those who may want to buy all organic and can not afford to. I can't understand how an innocent question could turn into this mud throwing competetion.

I wasn't judging. I don't care what anyone else does. It's just not something I choose to do. Maybe it's b/c I'm in healthcare and see the ill effects of super bugs and such.

I am just curious how even non organic people spend under $100/week. I guess family size does matter but I feel like even when it was DH and I, I was spending $125 or more.

Food prices have definitely gone up so it really peaks my interest to see how people do it, especially those eating mostly organic. Hats off to you all b/c I've tried and even with scouring the internet and trying to go to more than one store (which) I won't do anymore I never saw a huge savings and felt like I was wasting a lot of time on it.

Re: OK People....How do you spend less than $100 a week on groceries

I spend less than $100 for 2 a week

I buy meat at the grocery store on the days when I see the $2.00 OFF stickers and freeze them. That is what I use first.
I plan my meals.
I stock up on 3-4 of an item when there is a big sale.
I use from my pantry first.
I buy fresh fruit / veggies, eggs, milk weekly.
I make enough for leftovers fro lunches.

My DH is not a picky eater so I try new recipes and repeat others.

This week I spent $30 on food.
Milk
pork chops (to freeze) for $2 off
sausages (to freeze) for $2 off
1lb chop meat
salad supplies
celery
carrots
2 sour creams -B1G1
bananas
apples
cherries
rolls
italian bread
eggs
1 container of ice cream - coupon

Sunday - Sausage / peper couscous combo used meat from freezer and veggies on hand
Monday - I had leftovers
DH worked late and made an omlette when he came home
Tonight - Raviolis (from freezer) with homemade sauce from freezer
Wednesday - eating out
Thursday - Tacos with chop meat purchased and shells from pantry
Friday - burgers and dogs from leftover chopmeat and dogs from last weeks shopping trip

The most I spend weekly grocery shopping is $85.

I find for me the biggest key is not using recipes with lots of ingredients. If you keep the meals simple you simply don't need to buy as much. If I do need a specialty ingredient I try to use it in other stuff too so it doesn't go to waste. It is hard though.

It’s just my husband and I, and I almost always spend closer to $50-$75. We eat breakfast and dinner at home virtually every day, and both pack lunches virtually every day as well. I use coupons when I can but it’s rare – as someone said, those are usually for the pre-packaged items and we don’t buy a lot of those. I do sit with the circular every week and we plan based on sales. We buy family packs of meat when they are on the best sales and freeze the rest. Most chicken cutlets these days are so huge and both DH and I can get dinner out of one chicken cutlet (and side dishes of course). We also don’t tend to make too many complex dinners – that’s when the ingredients really start to add up. We don’t buy tons of snacks or processed food at all. In a typical week, we’ll have produce, deli meat and cheese (for DH’s lunches), maybe a family pack of meat if it’s on sale that week, maybe cereal/rice/etc if it’s on sale that week, milk, OJ, eggs (if needed), and makings for lunches for me (typically I make some kind of soup on Sunday and eat it all week).

1 actual chicken cutlet -- some of them are so big! I butterfly it and we each eat half (so it's like it's pounded thin). Then we'll have a vegetable and likely either half a sweet potato/baked potato, some rice/pasta or something similar. DH is really active, but this is enough for us. I guess maybe we eat more vegetable to make up for it.

Yeah I mean I guess it's not a ton to eat, but it's really enough for me! Another example, If we get a family pack of london broil that would give us 4 meals, because we'll eat half of one london broil for one meal...

Some people just aren't big eaters. Some people can eat like a horse. That obviously makes a dramatic difference in one families grocery bill vs. another families.

Yea - I try to stay at about $75 a week for me and DH and he is 6'9" 350 pounds (built like a linebacker) its tough. I feel like sometimes I eat less so he can have more, but I make sure he has more snack stuff in the house to eat between meals (string cheese, fruit, nuts, protein bars) so that he is not starving when dinner time comes.

Yep! All meals, and paper goods. I am not a snacker so I don't buy much. Maybe some rice cakes and sometimes pretzels. Other than that, organic fruits and veggies, organic meats and some staples like flour.

Go to King Kullen for paper goods. There are always coupons and they double them. When things are on sale and you use coupons all you have to do is stock up when there are sales.

Yeah, I spend $200 + a week for a family of 4. That includes mostly organic food, very little processed foods, and 3 of us have breakfast lunch and dinner. Does not include paper goods or diapers.

The thing is I really enjoy cooking and I make a lot of elaborate meals, so I think that makes a big difference. I was always curious as to how people did it and after this thread I see it's really a difference in amount and complexity of meals. It would never work for me but I guess when you are on a budget you make it work.

Honestly, I go food shopping maybe once a month and I spend about $200 at that visit. Dont know how, I just do. We work alot so we're not home snacking. We pack lunch with a fruit and eat dinner at home.

Re: OK People....How do you spend less than $100 a week on groceries

I just came back from the supermarket and I spent $113, but it is for at least 2 weeks worth of meals, as I do menu planning two weeks at a time (so that works out to $56.50 a week). I bought grocery, refrigerated, frozen, produce, health and beauty, trash bags, and meat. I didn't buy all organic but I also didn't buy junk food or prepackaged meals. This also stuff to make for lunches for me and DH. If anyone is interested in a list of what I bought, let me know.

I know the big difference is the organic stuff, it can get pretty pricey. While I am not buying organic, I feel better that at least my food is not pre packaged and my meals are made by me at home. I also am making my own dog treats at home (yummy all natural peanut butter ones) and goldfish crackers for snacking.

Oh, ok. We always have snack food on hand because I have kids and we never know what other kids will be coming over.
I have been spending anywhere from $100-$150/week for 4 people. The better we eat, the more expensive it is.
