1. If you're buying organic for a family of four expect to pay more than $100 a week.

2. Since when are paper products included in groceries? That's odd to me. We only buy napkins, toilet paper and paper towels and I am not feeding my family with those. I am not feeding them cleaning products either.

3. Some people need to stop finding an argument in EVERYTHING. People shop differently. Giving someone the second degree isn't going to help others just because you have a zillion years experience shopping and cannot conceive of someone feeding their kids frozen pancakes with *gasp* no fruits or veggies once in a blue moon. Must be nice to be so perfect.

That's a great question.
For those of you that spend more than $100 a week, can you list out your items?

I think some people might be talking about different kinds of chicken cutlets. I cannot imagine eating 4 chicken cutlets, and my children would never eat 2. I buy a box of them at BJ's that come individually packaged for $9.99. Some organic brand (which isn't why I buy them). I think there are 8 of them. They are gigantic. My kids often split one, and I can never eat the entire thing.

I was thinking this too!

We buy breasts, but small ones...and we eat 2 for a family of five.

I think one big thing is those who spend less maybe eat less or less meat.

I know we have cut down on meat and try to avoid leftovers and our budget went down drastically.

We buy maybe 60%-75% organic...snacks, meat and dairy being the most important and when I put my mind to it I spend less.

Last week I spent $80 for our family of 5 ...And didnt buy anything processed except some american cheese, bread and whole wheat puffed cakes. That was last Friday and we still have a good 3-4 meals from that food left, so ot lasted me over a week.

like others mentioned, we have foods/staples left over from previous weeks.

I have also actually found I spend LESS when I buy more frequently. Which to me seemed like it would be the other way around. As long as I avoid impulse purchases.

Oh, ok. I put everything that I buy at the grocery store or bulk warehouse in my "grocery" budget.

Well isn't that wonderful.

Look, the OP asked about feeding her family for $100 or less a week. Unless you are having napkin sandwiches I don't think it makes sense to include that stuff. Following that logic you could include your shoes, cough medicine and razor blades too because, technically, you need that stuff but you're NOT EATING IT.

Holy fluck I am done with this thread.

I don't really do a set budget anymore but when I did, I had category for "other small items." This would include:

paper goods
cleaning items
personal care items
small household items (example - need to buy cordless phone for our kitchen soon - we'll get a cheapo since we rarely use it)

Basically CVS, rite aid, target runs

Sometimes the grocery store does have the best price on paper goods (see my previous post on this thread) in which case I would just take that into consideration when looking at the numbers but that's the type of thing we'll get so cheap it doesn't make a big difference in the budget anyway.

I don't buy paper goods, shampoo, razors etc. at the grocery store. I usually get that stuff at Target, CVS, etc, where it's typically much cheaper.

What sparked this thread was random people (not always on here) saying they did there shopping for a week or more for $60-100. Different people have had different amounts.

It's not a magic number and I'll probably never meet it but I was just wondering how the heck people do this and what are they buying for under $100.

Yeah I doubt that would ever happen with us either...$100 seems low to me, but I really don't keep track.
I just buy what I need/want that week and it is what it is.

Plus sometimes my DH runs to the supermarket on his way home from work to pick up some stuff we may need or he may want. Then I'll do a shopping on the weekend- we aren't very formal! Chat Icon
