Wow..like others said, ask people to bring a side dish or a dessert - don't charge them for eating at your house!

Just so tacky!!! If you don't have the budget to cook, then do what you can & ask your guests to bring something. Don't ask for money Chat Icon

That is tacky. IMO if they cannot afford it, don't host it.

I agree!!

If anything she should have asked you to bring a side dish.

People are weird.

Re: OK, seriously...how tacky can a person be?

Unfortunately, I know all about this. It's happened to me, more than once (with the same person). Instead of making food, the host got it catered and then give everyone their amount that they had to pay.

This was for a total of 8 adults and 7 children. We don't have children but were expected to pay the same as the other parents anyway.

Now instead of doing that, she makes everyone bring more than one item. Like 1 appetizer + 1 main meal thing (like bread) + 1 dessert. For one couple. And she tells you, you don't get to decide.

I'll be lucky if I get off with 2 items this year. It's not so easy to blow them off when it means you won't see your family for the holidays. Chat Icon

You could offer to host Thanksgiving for them. It sounds like they're having serious financial problems and would probably appreciate your hospitality and generosity.

OMG, you should ask them to chip in for your gas money then because it's so expensive and you may not be able to make it...Chat Icon Chat Icon

What are you going to do?

DH turned around and told her that we'll host if that it was such an issue for their tight budget. It's also easier on him since he works retail and has to open his store at 6am the next day.

She did not ask him if they could bring anything, nor will I ask them to.

I would have preferred to have been asked to bring SEVERAL side dishes....heck I would have made ALL the side dishes and dessert.

So now I'm roasting my first big bird next week and not a clue as to how to do it

I'm curious to see if she brings anything to your house!

Good luck cooking!
